Runners from the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference had a strong showing at the 2008 NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships this past weekend, as four men and three women earned All-America honors for their efforts. The national meets were held at Slippery Rock University’s Cooper’s Lake Campground course.
At the forefront of the PSAC contingent was Shippensburg freshman Neely Spence, who finished the 6K race second overall in a time of 21:27. Spence was 28 seconds off the pace of individual national champion Jessica Pixler, a junior from Seattle Pacific. Joining Spence with All-America status was teammate Mary Dell, who crossed the finish line at 22:34, good for 33rd overall. The pair led a Lady Raider squad that finished sixth out of 24 teams entered in the competition.
Splitting the Shippensburg representatives was Slippery Rock’s Jamie Wright, who capped off her collegiate career with an 11th-place finish on her home course. Wright and Jennifer Harpp (40th) helped Slippery Rock finish 11th in the team race.
PSAC and NCAA Regional champion Chris Clark of California turned in the top league performance on the men’s side. Clark finished the 8K course in 31:12 to place fourth overall. His time was 47 seconds off champion Scott Bauhs of Chico State.
Slippery Rock had a pair of individuals qualify for the championships in Jeff Weiss and Pat Reagan, and both were crowned as All-Americans with eighth- and 34th-place showings, respectively. For Weiss, it was his fourth All-America certificate in as many years.
Edinboro topped the PSAC efforts behind All-American Ben Hahn, who finished 19th overall in 31:48. The Fighting Scots finished 16th overall, three spots ahead of Lock Haven, which tied for 19th.
