Day One Results

Mechanicsburg, Pa. - California (Pa.)'s Marianne Juhl and West Chester's Rod King took the individual titles in the women's and men's 1000 freestyle on Thursday night as the 2009 PSAC men's and women's swimming championships kicked off from Cumberland Valley High School. After the two events, West Chester narrowly leads both the men's and women's team standings.

Juhl took the women's 1000 free title in 10:14.65, edging out IUP's Jen Price by under two seconds. Price came in second at 10:16.17. West Chester picked up a chunk of points as the Golden Rams claimed both third and fourth place as Kristen Montello and Danielle Ierley came in third and fourth, respectively in times of 10:22.51 and 10:31.84. Ierly barely edged out Kutztown's Heather Wolkom, who placed fifht just .04 of a second behind Ierley.

In the men's 1000 free, King, the defending PSAC champion in the 1650 free, which will be contested on Sunday, beat out teammate and defending 1000 champion Max Bernardes by just under three seconds, touching the wall in 9:26.91, while Bernardes placed second in 9:29.83. King's mark set a PSAC championship meet record, breaking the old mark previously set by Shippensburg's Mike Owens in 2007. Clarion's Dustin Fedunok, Edinboro's Max Niggel and Shippensburg's Shane Wolter finished 3-4-5 to round out the top five.

The West Chester women lead by 10 points with 38 points. IUP is in second place with 28 while Kutztown is in third with 22. The Golden Ram men have 37 points and are followed by Edinboro with 30 and Shippensburg with 29.

A full day of action is on tap tomorrow with morning preliminary heats followed by finals in the evening.
