California, Pa. - Brooque Williams scored 28 points and California held Gannon to just 29.6 percent shooting from the floor in an outstanding defensive effort as the Vulcans topped Gannon 64-40 in the third round of the NCAA Tournament and the NCAA Atlantic Regional Final on Monday night. The win advances Cal to the NCAA Elite Eight for the second consecutive year. The Vulcans will play in San Antonio in two weekends for a national championship.
Gannon shot just 25 percent in the first half as the Vulcans opened up a lead as large as 27 points. The Golden Knights scored just 15 points in the first half. For the game, Gannon did not have any players in double figures in points. They were led by Kim Vargas, who scored nine points, and Kristina Freeman, who grabbed 11 rebounds.
Williams recorded a double-double for Cal, adding 10 rebounds to her 28 points. Lindsay Johnson scored 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds while Kayla Smith had nine points and 11 boards.
