Edinboro's Phil Moricone went 2-0 this past weekend on his way to being honored as the PSAC Athlete of the Week.
Phil Moricone - Edinboro
Graduate Student
Derry, N.H. / Pinkerton
Moricone put forth an impressive effort to go 2-0 against very strong competition this past week. His first match of the week occurred Friday against Pittsburgh's David Sullivan. Sullivan entered the match with a 20-10 record but Moricone pinned him at 4:15, claiming one of just three Edinboro victories in the dual.
He then returned to the mat to square off with West Virginia's Matt Weston. After a furious first period, Moricone took an 8-7 advantage. Then in the second Moricone began taking control of the match, exteding his lead to 11-8. In the third he preceeded to pull away in dominant fashion as he earned near falls points, outscoring Weston 6-1 and eventually winning by major decision, 17-9. The win over Weston extended Moricone's record to 16-3.
Moricone returned this season after having missed all but one of the Fighting Scots duals due to a neck injury. He also missed most of his 2005-06 season due to a shoulder injury. Despite his injury plauged career at Edinboro, Moircone has still managed to put up a record of 91-36 throughout his career.
