PSAC Swimmer of the Week - 8 (Feb. 9)

Lock Haven, Pa. - California’s Melissa Gates is this week’s PSAC Women’s Swimmer of the Week after she posted a pair of NCAA ‘A’ automatic qualifying times at a tri-meet this past weekend. There were no nominees this week for the men’s swimmer of the week award.

At a tri-meet on Sunday featuring California as well as Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon, Gates won both the 50 and 100 freestyle events and was also a part of the first place 200 freestyle relay team. The sophomore improved her NCAA ‘A’ automatic qualifying time in the 50 free by touching the wall in :23.27 and also posted an ‘A’ time in the 100 free by touching the wall in :51.85. She anchored the winning 200 free relay team that won in a time of 1:39.14, just 1.05 seconds ahead of the second place team. Gates currently holds the top marks in the 50 free in both the PSAC and NCAA Division II, as well as the sixth-best time in the country in the 100 free.
