2009-10 All-PSAC Men's Tennis Team (pdf)
Lock Haven, Pa. - Kutztown senior Jonathan Goulet has been named the PSAC Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Year, becoming the second straight Golden Bear to garner the postseason award after helping lead Kutztown to its second straight PSAC championship last weekend. Goulet’s teammate Cameron O’Donnell has been named the PSAC Freshman of the Year while Mercyhurst head coach Ray Yost, who guided his team to an upset win in the PSAC semifinals and runner-up finish in the PSAC Tournament, has been named the PSAC Coach of the Year.
There are four new faces on this year’s All-PSAC singles team as only two are repeat honorees from last year. Goulet, who earns his first career all-conference recognition, was one of two Golden Bears named to the All-PSAC singles team, as he was joined by sophomore Kaushik Das, who earns his second straight honor. The All-PSAC singles team also featured two players from second place Bloomsburg and two from third place Mercyhurst. Representing the Huskies are sophomore Ricky Dove and junior Fernando Perez. Dove is a first time honoree while Perez is on the All-PSAC singles team for the third straight year. Mercyhurst’s Keith Whittingham and Kyle King round out the squad. Both also earn their first career All-PSAC honor in singles.
The All-PSAC doubles teams are also dotted by several new faces, as five of six honorees making up the three doubles teams are first time All-PSAC honorees at doubles. Only Kutztown’s Arpit Sharma, who is on the all-conference doubles team for the third straight year, is a repeat winner. Sharma, who teamed up with former teammate and last year’s Player of the Year Lukas Labitsch to make the All-PSAC doubles team the last two seasons, partnered with Das this year to earn the nod. Sharma ends his career as a three-time all-conference pick in doubles and was also a singles pick in 2008. Millersville’s Tyler Reppert and Erik Wright both earn all-conference recognition for the first time on both of their careers as the second doubles team, while Mercyhurst’s Whittingham and Mijo Cotic round out the doubles squads. Whittingham joins Das as the only athletes to be honored this year in both all-conference singles and doubles, while Cotic earns the all-league nod at doubles this year after being named to the All-PSAC singles team last year.
Goulet wrapped up an outstanding career at Kutztown. He was also the runner-up at the PSAC Individual Championships last fall, finished second to his teammate Das in singles. This year, he played exclusively at No. 2 singles and compiled an overall record of 12-4, including a perfect 5-0 mark in PSAC play. He went 9-2 in dual matches. In doubles, he compiled a 10-6 record while pairing with two different partners. He primarily played with Bobby Zerwick and the duo combined to go 6-5, including 6-4 at No. 2 doubles and 3-2 in the PSAC.
O’Donnell jumped onto the scene at Kutztown and saw extensive action at both No. 5 and No. 6 singles during his inaugural campaign. He compiled a 6-5 singles record this year, including a 4-1 mark at No. 5 and a 3-1 mark in the PSAC. He also formed a doubles team with Ashok Murkerjee, which combined to go 10-3 in doubles play this year, all at No. 3 doubles, including a perfect 5-0 mark in PSAC play.
Yost earns the PSAC Coach of the Year award after guiding the Lakers to a 13-11 overall dual match record this year, including a 3-2 mark in the PSAC. The Lakers finished in third place during the regular season, earning the third seed in the conference tournament, where they upset No. 2 seed Bloomsburg in an exciting 5-4 match in the semifinals. They later fell to Kutztown 5-2 in the championship match to finish as the PSAC runner-up this year. Prior to its loss in the PSAC championship match, the Lakers had finished strong down the stretch of the season, as they has won six out of their last eight contests.
