IUP, Clarion Men's Golf Teams Advance to NCAA Nationals

Daniels, W.Va. - IUP and Clarion both placed in the top five in the team standings at the NCAA regionals to advance onto the NCAA national championships while Drew Deimel of Gannon, who competed as an individual at the regional tournament, finished in the top 10 to advance onto national as an individual. The tournament wrapped up yesterday at the Resort Course at Glade Springs - Cobb Course.

IUP finished second to host Concord, shooting a three-day total of +40 to finish 11 strokes behind Concord and 12 strokes in front of third place St. Thomas Aquinas. Clarion finished in fifth place with a three-day total of +60, just one stroke in front of sixth place American International to grab the final qualifying spot out of the regional. Other PSAC teams competing in the regional included California (10th) and Millersville (11th).

In addition to IUP and Clarion, which qualifyed as teams, Gannon golfer Drew Deimel qualified as an individual, as he finished in a tie for sixth place with a three-round total of nine-over 225. Deimel was one of four PSAC golfers to finish in the top 10. IUP's Gavin Smith, the defending NCAA individual medalist, shot a three-day total of one-under 215, the only golfer in the field to shoot under par for the tournament and the only one to post a sub-70 score in an individual round, as his first round 68 was the only round below 70 of the tournament. Smith finished one shot in front of Concord's Ryan Terdik and three in front of third place Ross Pringle of Clarion, who shot a two-over 218. Leo Acklin of IUP tied for eighth place at 10-over 226.

The NCAA Division II men's golf national championships will be held May 18-21 at the Sagamore Golf Club in Noblesville, Ind.
