2011 All-PSAC Field Hockey Teams (pdf)
Lock Haven, Pa. – Carlee Dragon of C.W. Post has been named the PSAC East Athlete of the Year while Kristina Taylor of Shippensburg has been named the PSAC West Athlete of the Year for the third consecutive season, as that duo, which is among the top five in the country in scoring, highlights the 2011 All-PSAC field hockey teams. Five teams were represented in the six major postseason awards. In addition to Dragon and Taylor, Rachel Dickinson of Millersville was named the East Freshman of the Year while IUP’s Casey McGowan was tabbed the West Freshman of the Year. The Coaches of the Year are both repeats from last year as Bloomsburg’s Nicole Rhoads and Shippensburg’s Bertie Landes took home the honors in the East and West, respectively.
Taylor leads the way as she is not only the only four-time first team All-PSAC selection on the squad but also the first three-time Athlete of the Year according to available award records in PSAC field hockey history. The Long Pond, Pa. native was also the West Freshman of the Year in 2008. Entering the NCAA Tournament, Taylor ranks third in the country and second in the PSAC in points per game (2.84), and third in the country and second in the PSAC in goals per game (1.21). She currently has 23 goals and 54 points, which are just one goal and three points shy of tying her career highs from the 2009 season. Taylor is just one of seven all-conference selections for the Lady Raiders, the most for any team in either division. She is joined on the first team by teammates Bre White, last year’s PSAC West Freshman of the Year, as well as juniors Taylor Jones and Jamie Levy and sophomore Katie Shoop. The five first team selections are also the most for any team. Senior Katie Pufnock and junior Ciarra Delost are on the second team.
Other highlights on the West teams include five players that garnered their third career all-conference selection. Mansfield junior midfielder Kristyn Grunza is a first team selection for the second straight year and is Mercyhurst senior back Serena Slattery. Slippery Rock junior Gabrielle Malishchak is now a three-time all-conference pick, earning second team honors this year for the second time in her career after being a first team selection last season. IUP junior midfielder Erin Shirk is a second team selection for the third straight season as is Mansfield senior back Jessie Wolski.
In the East, Bloomsburg and West Chester, who finished first and second in the standings, respectively, led the way with five all-conference selections apiece. Both each had four players on the first team. The Huskies’ Amanda Riley, last year’s East Athlete of the Year, leads the way on the first team. She is joined by teammates Amber Aulenbach, a junior midfielder, Betsy Renn, a senior back and Meghan Hollenbach, a junior goalkeeper, on the first team, while sophomore back Jackie Beasley is on the second team. West Chester’s representatives on the first team are junior forward Kayla Gluchowski, senior midfielder Leah Angstadt, junior midfielder Michele Schrift and senior back Brynn Adams, while senior forward Nicole Fiorilla is on the second team.
Riley is one of three players making their third career appearance on the East all-conference team and it is her third straight first team selection. Riley’s teammate Renn is also a three-time selection and this is her second straight year on the first team. Kutztown senior midfielder Kim Angstadt is on the second team for the second straight season after being a first team pick two years ago. In total, 16 of the 22 selections on the West team are repeat selections and only six players earned their first career all-conference recognition. There are many more new faces on the East team as 16 of the 22 selections are first time honorees.
Dragon is the first ever East Athlete of the Year from C.W. Post as this is just the Pioneers’ fourth season in the league. Dragon, a second team All-PSAC East selection last year as a freshman, is third in the PSAC and fourth in the country in points per game (2.83) and leads the PSAC and is second in the nation in goals per game (1.22). Her 22 goals also rank second in the conference.
The Freshmen of the Year in each division are both backs and both greatly contributed to their teams this season. McGowan, the West Freshman of the Year, started all 20 games for the Crimson Hawks on the back line, recording a goal and an assist and helping the Crimson Hawks return to the PSAC Tournament after a two-year absence. Dickinson led her team in scoring as a back with four goals and 10 points.
Landes and Rhoades are both the Coaches of the Year for the second consecutive season, while Landes earns the West Coach of the Year honor for the third straight season. Landes guided the Lady Raiders to their third straight PSAC West championship, all of which have been undefeated seasons in divisional play, while also leading her team to the NCAA Tournament for the fourth consecutive season. Rhoades, in just her second year as head coach, has guided the Huskies to an unbeaten season so far entering the NCAA Tournament and the Huskies also won their fourth straight PSAC Tournament championship and fourth straight PSAC East title.
