Football - Week 2
Week 2 Football Notes (pdf)
Two final non-conference games and seven PSAC 'crossover' games are featured in Week 2 of the PSAC football season. Higlighting the slate is a matchup of a pair of Top 25 teams as No. 19/18 Kutztown travels to Erie to meet up with No. 18/17 Mercyhurst. The Golden Bears are coming off a record-setting performance in a win over St. Anselm last week while the Lakers barely escaped in overtime with a win over Notre Dame College. Both squads have players on offense capable of putting up big numbers and scoring points in bunches so it could be a potential high-scoring affair by the lake.
Elsewhere, both IUP and Lock Haven open their seasons this Saturday after sitting out on opening weekend. The Crimson Hawks host East Stroudsburg while Lock Haven hosts Millersville. Edinboro will host Merrimack from the Northeast 10 in a matchup of 1-0 teams while Cheyney traveling to meet Slippery Rock on the opposite corner of the state is the other game featuring two 1-0 teams. West Chester travels to meet 2010 Division I FCS national runner-up Delaware in the other non-conference tilt of the day.
PSAC Football - Week Two Notes - 9/7/11
Quick Hits
- For the second straight week, the PSAC leads all conferences in number of teams ranked in both the AFCA and D2football.com polls. Four PSAC teams are ranked in both polls. The MIAA also has four teams ranked in both polls.
- With two more non-conference games this week, the PSAC has a 7-7 record in non-conference action. Since the current setup of the PSAC went into effect in 2008, the PSAC is now 31-29 in regular season non-conference action, including 31-25 against Division II opponents.
- In addition to the two non-conference games remaining on the slate, this weekend also features the first of three weeks of PSAC ‘crossover’ play, matching up teams from opposite divisions - the East and West.
- During the three previous years of the current PSAC divisional setup, the West leads the East 41-31 in crossover games. The West went 15-9 in crossover games in 2008 and won 14 games to the East’s 10 last year. The divisions each won 12 games apiece in 2009.
- Kutztown accumulated 697 yards of total offense in its 56-30 Week 1 win over St. Anselm. That total offensive output was the ninth-highest in PSAC history and the most in Golden Bear program history.
- The architect of Kutztown’s offense is QB Kevin Morton, who threw for six TDs in the win. East Stroudsburg QB Ray Wagner also threw for six TDs in the Warriors’ win over Pace. With both QBs throwing for six TDs, it marked only the second time in PSAC history that more than one QB has thrown for six TDs in a game in the same season. The only other time is happened was 1999, when Millersville’s Drew Folmar (who coincidentally is now the Kutztown offensive coordinator) and West Chester’s Mike Mitros both accomplished the feat. Even more ironic, Folmar accomplished the feat against East Stroudsburg while Mitros did it against Kutztown. However, both Folmar and Mitros did so in different weeks of the season, making Morton’s and Wagner’s accomplishment the first time in PSAC history that two different QBs have thrown for six TDs in the same week of a season.
- Kutztown was not the only team with over 650 yards of total offense last week as East Stroudsburg also had 667. Those two performances marked the first time since 2005 that two PSAC teams produced at least 650 yards of total offense in the same week of the season. In 2005, both East Stroudsburg (vs. C.W. Post) and California (vs. Mansfield) had at least 650 yards of total offense on September 10.
- Both Kutztown and East Stroudsburg scored 56 points last week. That marked the first time since 1996 that two PSAC teams put up at least 55 points in the first week of the season. That year, both West Chester (62) and East Stroudsburg (56) scored at least 55 in the opening week.
- Cheyney sophomore RB Marcus Jones has now played in 10 career games and amazing, has only been tackled for a loss in one game - vs. Shippensburg last season. In that game, he was tackled for a loss twice. In 178 career carries entering this week’s game, he has only been tackled for a loss on two of them. He has gained 1,018 yards and lost just five.
- Bloomsburg sophomore RB Franklyn Quiteh has now played in 14 career games and has 13 100-yard games after last week’s 144-yard performance. The only time he was held below 100 yards was against IUP last year. Bloomsburg and IUP play next week.
Edinboro Defense Slows Down Potent West Liberty Attack
Edinboro defeated West Liberty 30-14 last week, which marked the fourth straight season-opening win for the Fighting Scots over the Hilltoppers. Edinboro has been the one team that West Liberty, which has had the highest-scoring offense in the country for the last two seasons, has been unable to figure out. Since the beginning of the 2008 season, when the teams began their current series, West Liberty has averaged 40.4 point per game in all contests and 43.3 points per contest in games not against Edinboro. In its four regular season games against Edinboro, the Hilltoppers have been held to just 18.3 points per game. Although the Hilltoppers exploded for 84 points in their 84-63 win over ‘Boro in the NCAA playoffs in 2009, West Liberty is just 1-5 against PSAC teams since the beginning of the 2008 season, including 1-4 against Edinboro. The Hilltoppers are 25-10 against all other teams.
Single Game HIghs
PSAC individuals and teams are responsible for five single-game highs in NCAA Division II so far this season. Those individuals are listed below.
- East Stroudsburg QB Ray Wagner has the highest single-game pass efficiency rating this season with a 321.5 rating vs. Pace on September 1.
- West Chester K Shawn Leo kicked four field goals against New Haven on September 3, one of two kickers in the country to have that many in a single game this year.
- East Stroudsburg’s 97-yard touchdown pass from Ray Wagner to Robert Bleiler vs. Pace on September 3 is the longest passing play in the country this year.
- Edinboro LB Ryan Skelton’s 11 solo tackles vs. West Liberty on September 3 and California S Rontez Miles’ 11 solo stops vs. St. Cloud State on September 1 are tied for the most for an individual in a single game this year.
- Edinboro CB James Jackson’s four passes defended vs. West Liberty on September 3 are tied for the most in a single game.
- East Stroudsburg’s 456 passing yards against Pace on September 3 are the most in a single game this year.
PSAC in Non-Conference Action

Pass Offense/Defense 277.0/4th; 380.0/14th 157.0/8th; 199.0/9th
Total Offense/Defense 341.0/7th; 601.0/14th 228.0/12th; 371.0/T9th
What to Expect
- This will be a matchup of two teams coming off two different types of losses in their first games. Shippensburg gave up a lot of yards and points to a potent offense but also scored its share, while Gannon put up a solid defensive performance but lost a close game as its inexperienced offense struggled to gain yards.
- Gannon’s best chance at a win would appear to be with its defense, which was solid last year, gave up a lot of yards against Lake Erie but generated four turnovers. The Knights may need to do the same against a Red Raider offense that committed three turnovers last week, including an interception thrown by QB Zach Zulli that was returned for a TD. Shippensburg will look to generate more of a running game, as the Raiders only ran for 64 yards as they were forced to throw after facing a large deficit.
- A key for Shippensburg’s defense will be putting pressure on Gannon QB Daniel Tapscott, who was sacked five times last week. Tapscott also completed just 15-of-34 passes last week so forcing him into throwing downs could also be a key.
Series/Game Notes
Gannon leads the all-time series with Shippensburg 1-0...The Golden Knights topped the Red Raiders 22-19 in Week 2 last season at Shippensburg.
#19/18 Kutztown (1-0) at #18/17 Mercyhurst (1-0)

Total Offense/Defense 697.0/1st; 438.0/12th 458.0/4th; 293.0/3rd
What to Expect
- Mercyhurst turned in another solid defensive performance last week despite allowing Notre Dame College to overcome a 10-point deficit and force overtime, but the Lakers will have a challenge of a different level this week with Kutztown, which is coming off the ninth-highest single-game offensive output in PSAC history. The Golden Bears have a balanced offense with its high-flying passing game and RBs Robbie Frey, and Josh Mastromatto. That duo each had 100-yard games last week, the first Kutztown duo to accomplish that since 2005.
- Kutztown QB Kevin Morton threw six TD passes last week but also had three interceptions while Mercyhurst QB Travis Rearick was not picked once. The QB that throws the fewest picks should give his team a big advantage given the explosiveness potential of both offenses.
- Just as Mercyhurst’s defense will be challenged, so will Kutztown’s, which gave up 30 points last week to a St. Anselm team that only averaged 21 last season. Although the Lakers only scored 24 last week, they had 458 yards of total offense, but two lost fumbles hurt them. Keeping Mercyhurst’s most dangerous open field player, Trevor Kennedy, contained could be a key.
Series/Game Notes
Kutztown leads Mercyhurst in the all-time series 1-0 after last year’s 35-14 win at home.

Total Offense/Defense 305.0/8th; 345.0/7th 426.0/5th; 316.0/5th
What to Expect
- Clarion struggled greatly in stopping the run against Fairmont State last week and that does not bode well at all for stopping Bloomsburg RB Franklyn Quiteh, the nation’s top rusher last season who picked up right where he left off in his team’s first game last week, rushing for 144 yards and a TD.
- Bloomsburg also gave up far more rushing yards than its average of last year against Ashland last week. It will also need to improve on that if it is to stop Clarion QB Ben Fiscus, a double threat who not only threw for 201 yards and a TD last week but also led the Golden Eagles in rushing with 90 yards and a TD.
- Special teams could also have an impact as both teams had long returns last week. Clarion’s Brandon Akins broke for a 20-yard punt return while Bloomsburg’s Kyle Fisher had a 78-yard kickoff return to broke Ashland’s comeback momentum.
Series/Game Notes
Bloomsburg leads Clarion in the all-time series, 5-4-1…Bloomsburg has won the last three meetings with wins over the Golden Eagles last year in Week 2, 41-13, as well as in both 2006 and 2007…Clarion’s last win over Bloom came in the first round of the 1996 NCAA playoffs…Prior to 1996, the teams had not met since the 1947 season…Clarion’s last regular season win over Bloomsburg came in 1946.

Total Offense/Defense 540.0/1st 296.0/9th; 243.0/2nd
What to Expect
- Merrimack is coming off a 60-3 win in its opening game over Division III Worcester Polytech. Although they overmatched their opponent, the Warriors do have a potent offense that is led by senior QB James Suozzo, who led the Northeast 10 in passing and total offense last season. He is a dual threat who is also one of the team’s top rushers. He and the Warriors will be going up against a defense that just shut down one of the top offenses in Division II over the last few years in West Liberty. While a dual threat like Suozzo almost always does damage in some way, a key for Edinboro may be shutting down other people, such as WR Isaiah Voegeli, who had 177 receiving yards and three TDs last week.
- On offense, Edinboro ran the ball extremely well last week, much better than it has on average over the last few years. Doing so helped them gain an advantage in time of possesion, which could prove helpful if the Fighting Scots are able to do so again to keep the ball out of Suozzo’s hands for extended periods.
- Edinboro K Alex Romanias was 3-for-3 on field goals last week, including hitting a 40-yarder. His reliability could be a key in a close game.
Series/Game Notes
This will mark Edinboro’s first-ever meeting with Merrimack...The Warriors made a trip to Northwestern PA last year to take on Slippery Rock and fell by a 45-26 score...Both teams are receiving votes in this week’s AFCA Top 25 poll.

Total Offense/Defense 256.0/10th; 300.0/4th 206.0/13th; 406.0/11th
What to Expect
- Both teams’ offenses struggled last week, with the squads combining for just 10 points. Both the Pioneers and Vulcans will be aiming for better offensive outputs in this matchup, however it is the defenses of both squads that appear to be further along at this point in the season.
- Post’s strength on offense appears to be the running game at this point with RBs Anthony Brunetti and Thomas Beverly as well as QB Steven Laurino, who led the team in rushing last week, running for 82 but throwing for just 107. Cal’s defense struggled to contain a dual-threat QB last week in St. Cloud State’s Philip Klaphake, who ran for 60 and threw for 201. Not falling behind early will be a key for C.W. Post so it isn’t forced into throwing. Cal LB Brett Diamond, who missed last week’s game is also questionable this week.
- California QB Peter Lalich struggled in his first action since 2008 last week but there were some bright signs, particularly with WR Thomas Mayo (7 rec. 80 yds.). Cal’s running game struggled, however, and it will need more production from the duo of Lamont Smith and Edwin Gowins.
Series/Game Notes
California leads the all-time series with C.W. Post 1-0 after last year’s 40-13 win.
East Stroudsburg (1-0) at IUP (0-0)

Total Offense/Defense 667.0/2nd; 371.0/T9th 298.3/11th; 291.8/3rd
What to Expect
- This game will mark the debut of IUP head coach Curt Cignetti, who will be coaching his first game against the PSAC’s all-time winningest head coach in ESU’s Denny Douds.
- East Stroudsburg is coming off an outstanding offensive performance against Pace in which it had 667 yards of total offense, including 211 on the ground, which was more than it had in all but one game last season. Establishing a running game with RBs Kendrick Williams and Eric Deery against a solid IUP defense may be a key so the Warriors aren’t forced into throwing all the time.
- IUP welcomes back QB Pat Smith, who broke his thumb in this game last year and missed the rest of the season. He brings more of a threat to the Crimson Hawk passing game, which struggled in his absence last season. Even with Smith, the Hawks will look to have a balanced approached with a loaded backfield of Harvie Tuck as well as Teddy Blakeman and James Johnson. That may be IUP’s best way to attack ESU, as the Warriors gave up 186 rushing yards last week even in a 42-point win.
Series/Game Notes
IUP leads the all-time series with East Stroudsburg 9-6…IUP has won the last three meetings, last year by a 23-17 score on the road, and in 2006 and 2007, while East Stroudsburg’s last win in the series came in 1997.

Total Offense/Defense 251.0/11th; 359.0/8th 371.0/6th; 195.0/1st
What to Expect
- Cheyney is coming off its first win in its season opener since 2000 while The Rock blew out Seton Hill, meaning both teams will be looking to stop the other’s early-season momentum.
- The Wolves best chance against The Rock would appear to be its running game behind Marcus Jones, who picked up right where he left off last season with a solid 96-yard effort. Cheyney threw for just 60 yards on only 13 attempts while running the ball 43 times and against a Rock pass defense that has been one of the best in the PSAC the last few years, the Wolves may find it just as tough passing.
- Slippery Rock’s strength is also the run behind Akeem Satterfield and LaQuinn Stephens-Howling, who combined for over 170 yards last week. Their efforts, combined with a big lead, did not require QB Cody Endres to throw much. Endres may throw more this week, especially considering Cheyney allowed 351 passing yards last week but only eight rushing yards, which is the complete opposite of recent Cheyney defenses that have struggled stopping the run.
Series/Game Notes
Slippery Rock leads Cheyney 3-0 in the all-time series, having defeated the Wolves last year on the road, 30-0, as well as in both 1992 and 1993.

Total Offense/Defense 465.0/3rd; 322.0/6th 363.0/3rd; 437.0/7th
What to Expect
- West Chester, which lost a heartbreaker in overtime last week, will have its hands full this week with Delaware, last season’s Division FCS national runner-up. The Blue Hens return several key skill position players from last year’s squad, including their top two rushers and top two receivers but have a new QB as both Trevor Sasek and Tim Donnelly saw time under center in last week’ season-opening loss to Division I FBS team Navy. The Golden Rams had an opportunistic defense last week, picking off four passes. They will need much of the same against a Blue Hen offense that will have more size than the Rams.
- The Golden Rams also appear to be unsettled at QB as both Sean McCartney and Matt Carroll took snaps last week, although they both were solid, combining for 283 yards and a TD. West Chester’s problem was its red zone offense as the Rams scored only three TDs on seven trips to the red zone, although it also had four FGs, but that was the difference as New Haven scored TDs on all four red zone possessions.
Series/Game Notes
Delaware leads the all-time series with West Chester 45-6-2...The series dates back to 1941 and is one of the most-played in West Chester history...This will be the 10th straight year that these teams have met and the 42nd time in the last 43 years, with 2001 being the only year the series hasn’t been played since 1968.

Total Offense/Defense 130.0/14th; 497.0/13th 231.2/16th; 410.7/14th
What to Expect
- Millersville is coming off a very disappointing performance in its first game of the season in which little went right. The Marauders started Dan Miller at QB but Kevin Fowle also saw action and neither could get the passing game going. The Marauders may be better off running against a Lock Haven defense that yielded over 200 rushing yard seven times last season.
- This game will mark the debut of Lock Haven head coach John Allen, who selected senior Jarryd Burkett as his starting QB. Burkett, who has started games in each of the last three seasons, was the most efficient of the three QBs that played for the Bald Eagles last season, as he completed over 60 percent of his passes for the most average yards and the fewest interceptions.
- Special teams could play a key in a close contest and Millersville may have the edge there as Lou Brown, who averaged 8.0 ypr on punts in 2009 but missed last year, returns. He had a 21-yard punt return last year. Lock Haven, by comparison, did not have a punt return longer than 19 yards last season and only returned 10.
Series/Game Notes
Lock Haven leads the all-time series with Millersville 16-8-1…Millersville has won the last five meetings in the series, including last year’s 35-21 win at home...This will be only the team’s sixth meeting since 1958, with the teams also meeting in both 1996, 1997, 2006 and 2007…Lock Haven’s last win the series came in 1958, a 32-0 victory.
