Weekly Wrestling Report: Week 6

Lock Haven, Pa. - Edinboro's Chris Honeycutt and Bloomsburg's Frank Hickman share Athlete of the week honors as both won tournament titles for the respective teams. Honeycutt won the 197 lb. title at the prestigious Midlands Tournament while Hickman won 157 lb. title at the Mat Town tournament.

Chris Honeycutt won his fifth individual tournament title of the season at the Midlands Tournament in Evanston, Ill. He opened with a 20-4 technical fall at 6:09 over Josh Wood of SIU-Edwardsville followed by a 20-8 major decision over Joe McMullan of Bucknell. In the quarterfinals Honeycutt posted a 5-2 decision over Illinois’ Mario Gonzales. That left him with a matchup against Byron Tate of Wartburg in the semifinals. Honeycutt pulled away for a 17-9 major decision over the No. 5 seed. Honeycutt, the No. 1 seed and ranked third at 197 by InterMat, met third-seeded Micah Burak of Penn, who is ranked ninth, in the finals. He gained a 2-0 lead with a takedown midway through the first period, then rode Burak the rest of the period. Following a scoreless second period, Honeycutt escaped to start the third for a 3-0 lead, and closed out the 4-0 decision with a point for riding time. Honeycutt remained undefeated on the season at 23-0 and improved to 113-20 for his career. He moved into a tie for 14th in school history in career wins.

Frank Hickman won his second individual tournament of the season at the Mat Town Invitational in Lock Haven. Hickman, who last month was named the Outstanding Wrestler at the PSAC Championships, opened the tournament with an 18-2 win over Eric Fajardo of Columbia, then pinned Eric Norgard of Franklin and Marshall in 3:44 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinal match, Hickman pinned No. 30 Brandon Zeerip of Michigan in 7:44 in a sudden victory. In the final matchup, Hickman rolled to a 9-1 win over Columbia's Jake O'Hara and is now 17-2 on the season.
