CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW
Lock Haven, Pa. - California (Pa.) is looking to clinch its second straight PSAC volleyball crown this weekend, but will first have to prevail over some stiff competition, including the Atlantic Region's No. 3 seed Gannon, No. 5 Lock Haven and No. 6 Shippensburg.
A year ago, California defeated Lock Haven 3-1 for the PSAC crown and will face the Lady Eagles in the semifinals on Friday, November 16, at 5:00 p.m. at the Hammermill Center in Erie, Pa. The Vulcans have captured the conference title in five of the last seven seasons, while Lock Haven is battling for its first league crown since 2006, where it defeated Cal 3-0 in the championship match.
The Haven has gained entry into the PSAC tournament in each of the last five seasons as the East's top seed. The Vulcans lead the all-time PSAC playoff series 4-1 against Lock Haven. California has captured seven PSAC titles, while Lock Haven is looking for its sixth all-time.
Gannon is scheduled to face Shippensburg at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, as the Lady Knights play host to the semifinal and championship matches. Gannon earned the top West seed for the first time since joining the PSAC in 2008, and its 25 overall wins and 17 conference victories mark the most by any Lady Knight program under the direction of head coach Matt Darling.
The last time Shippensburg and Gannon met (9/22), the Lady Knights downed the Raiders in three games. However, the Raiders have shown significant improvement over the last half of their season, as they have won nine of their last 10 matches. The trip to the 2012 semis marks the first time Shippensburg has made it past the quarterfinal round since 2009. Neither Gannon nor Shippensburg has ever earned a PSAC Championship title, or played in the PSAC championship match.
The winners of each semifinal match will face-off at the Hammermill Center on Saturday, November 17, at 7:00 p.m.
