PSAC Softball Athletes of the Week - 5
This week's PSAC softball weekly honorees include a pair of pitchers that threw no-hitters last week as Sarah Bertoni of Millersville no only tossed a no-no, but it was also the first in school history. Slippery Rock's Shaylee Ianno also threw her second career no-no.
PSAC East Player of the Week
Heather Hannum, Kutztown
Senior, IF
Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham
Hannum hit .556 (5-for-9) with four runs scored, two home runs and five RBI to help Kutztown to four wins in as many games last week. She compiled a 1.222 slugging percentage and a .667 on-base percentage for an 1.889 OPS. She clubbed a three-run homer in the first inning of the second game in a doubleheader sweep of Georgian Court. Against West Chester, Hannum scored the only run of Game 1 with a solo dinger in the second inning and in the second game, Hannum drove in one of Kutztown's two runs in a 2-1 win.
PSAC East Pitcher of the Week
Sarah Bertoni, Millersville
Freshman, P
Nanticoke, Pa./Greater Nanticoke
Bertoni compiled a 4-0 record with a 1.03 ERA in 26.1 innings of work for the Marauders last week, which included throwing the first no-hitter in program history in last Tuesday's 7-0 win over Philadelphia. In that game, Bertoni walked one and struck out two. A day later, she allowed one run on six hits in another complete game effort to pick up the win over Holy Family. In her third start of the week, and her first conference start against West Chester, she threw a complete-game one-hitter, walking two and striking out two to help the Marauders to a twinbill split with the Golden Rams. Bertoni wrapped up the week with a 5.1-inning effort in which she allowed two runs on seven hits to help Millersville to a doubleheader split with East Stroudsburg. For the week, she allowed 14 hits, three runs and three walks while striking out 13 and compiled a WHIP of 0.65.
PSAC Central Player of the Week
Kate Pratt, Mansfield
Sophomore, IF
Troy, Pa./Troy
Pratt went 2-for-6 (.333) with a pair of home runs and five RBI in Mansfield's doubleheader split with Bloomsburg last week. After the Mounties fell 5-0 in the first game, Pratt's hitting helped the Mounties to their first win over Bloomsburg since 2006, which was also just the second win over Bloomsburg at home in school history. Pratt drilled a three-run homer in the third inning to erase a 2-1 deficit and later added a two-run round-tripper in the fifth to help Mansfield to the 6-2 win.
PSAC Central Pitcher of the Week
Kelly King, IUP
Sophomore, P
Nazareth, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic
King went 2-0 with a pair of complete games and a shutout for IUP last week, helping the Crimson Hawks go 3-1. King allowed 12 hits and just one earned run in 14 innings of work for a 0.50 ERA, walked two and struck out five. She first went the distance in a 5-1 win over Shepherd, allowing six hits and striking out three. She then struck out two, walked two and allowed six hits while consistently pitching out of jams to pick up the win in a 1-0 victory over Lock Haven.
PSAC West Player of the Week
Kirstie Cortazzo, Gannon
Sophomore, IF
Jeannette, Pa./Jeannette
Cortazzo hit .438 (7-for-16) with five runs scored, a double, three home runs and seven RBI to help Gannon to a 3-1 mark last week. She compiled a 1.063 slugging percentage and an OPS of 1.501. In a doubleheader sweep of Seton Hill, Cortazzo had three hits and two RBI, including a home run in a come-from-behind win in the second game. In a doubleheader split with California, Cortazzo was the biggest reason behind Gannon's win as she blasted a pair of home runs and went 3-for-5 with five RBI. She first got the Golden Knights on the scoreboard with a solo home run and then, in the eighth inning, blasted a grand slam in the 9-4 win.
