CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW
Mechanicsburg, Pa. – Cumberland Valley High School will play host to the 2013 PSAC Swimming Championships from Thursday, February 14, through Sunday, February 17. This season’s championship event will mark the 54th year for the men’s championship and the 38th year for the women’s.
Men's Championship
The West Chester men’s team is looking to defend its PSAC title for the 15th consecutive season. However, the Golden Rams do not hold the longest winning streak, as Clarion men won 19 straight from 1971-1989. Clarion is the last team prior to West Chester to win a PSAC title, that coming in 1998.
Senior distance swimmer and last season’s Men’s Swimmer of the Year and the championship MVP, Tommy Rhoads, returns to the pool for the Golden Rams. Rhoads won both the 200 and 500 freestyles and placed second in the 1000 free at the PSAC Championship in 2012.
Last season’s runner-up Gannon, will also send a host of swimmers to this season’s championship. Senior Ethan Chase will lead the Golden Knights as he hunts for gold in the 100 and 200 butterfly as well as the 50 free. Last season Chase was out-touched by Steve Long of IUP in the 200 fly, as Chase holds the Gannon records in both the 100 (50.33) and 200 (1:52.90) fly events.
Edinboro who placed third as a squad in 2012 is sending 11 men’s swimmers into the Cumberland Valley High pool led by Tony Romanini and Darren Suroviec. Romanini is the reigning PSAC champion in the 100-yard backstroke and the 200 IM, while Suroviec will be taking part in three individual events.
For the Clarion men, Joseph Ward, is back to defend his title in the 100 free, a race he has won in each of the last two championships. Ward currently holds the PSAC all-time record with a time of 44.30.
Bloomsburg will send the maximum 18 swimmers to compete, Shippensburg has 16 men’s swimmers representing the squad, and IUP will also be represented at the Championship.
Women's Championship
In the women’s competition West Chester is looking to defend its six consecutive PSAC titles. Winning the 2013 crown would mark the Golden Rams’ 11th title in program history, but similar to the men’s championship history, Clarion holds the most crowns in PSAC Championship history with 26, including 23 straight between 1976-1998.
In the pool from West Chester junior Kacie McNichol is back to defend her PSAC title in the 1650 free, an event she current holds both the PSAC All-Time and Championship records. Last season McNichol placed second in the event at the NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving Championship.
Clarion took second place last season and will have 15 swimmers competing in the championship led by Kayla Shull, a three-time defending PSAC champion in the 100 backstroke. If Shull is able to shave .43 seconds off her 55.98 time she will break the 100 back PSAC Championship record set in 2009.
The Vulcans from California was third as a team in 2012 led by senior swimmer Melissa Gates, who boasts two PSAC All-Time records ad two national titles. Despite the loss of Gates, Cal’s Clarissa Enslin is looking to carry on the freestyle sprint tradition for the Vulcans in the 50, 100 and 200 free. Enslin is seeded first in the PSAC in the 100 with a time of 51.69.
Gannon came in fourth as a team last season at the PSAC Championship and sport a group of swimmers that have combined for eight broken school records this season, while posting 169 PSAC-qualifying times and 55 individual titles. Two-time PSAC Swimmer of the Week, freshman Morgan Lydic will swim in the 50 and 100 free sprints.
Edinboro, Bloomsburg, Shippensburg, Kutztown, Lock Haven and East Stroudsburg will also be sending swimmers to compete in the PSAC Championship. Mansfield will not be swimming at the Championship this season, as the Mountaineers were unable to qualify for participation.
