CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW

Edinboro, Pa. – The 2013 PSAC Indoor Track & Field Championship returns to Mike S. Zafirovski Sports and Recreation Dome this weekend on the campus of Edinboro University of Pennsylvania for the fourth straight season.

Men's Championship

Shippensburg is looking to defend its indoor title for the third straight season, as the program holds five titles since the championship’s inception in 2002. Five-time PSAC Indoor Champion, Lock Haven, is on the hunt for its first crown since 2010. Slippery Rock has finished in second-place at the past two championships and is working to repeat its 2008 PSAC Indoor Champion title.

On the track, Shippensburg’s Tom Kehl won the 800m run at the PSAC Championship last season and will be competing for another conference title. SU’s defending PSAC championship 4x800 relay team has already broken the PSAC All-Time record of 7:42.80 set by Mansfield in 2008 this season with a time of 7:42.49. The 200m race looks to be a toss-up amongst five PSAC sprinters, as all five have notched a NCAA provisional mark in the event this season. SU’s Matthew Kujawski is the top seed in the event with a time of 21.61. Devin Barr of Bloomsburg is second with a 21.84 time, SU’s Robert Bales is third (22.08), East Stroudsburg’s Keith Parker-Washington is fourth (22.19), and Aaron Barlow of California (Pa.) rounds out the top five with a time of 22.20.

In the distance events, junior Alex Monroe for Lock Haven, Aaron Dinzeo of California (Pa.), and Shippensburg’s Matt Gillette will be battling it out for the top spots in the mile and the 3,000m. The trio holds the top three slots in the 3,000, with Gillette gripping the fastest time of the league with 8:09.33. Gillette also holds the best time in the mile race, with less than four seconds between him and Monroe.

In the field events, Slippery Rock’s reigning outdoor national champion Cameron Daugherty is on the hunt for indoor gold in the pole vault, as his best mark of the season (16’ 8.75”) is over six inches higher than his closest conference competitor, Percell Berry of Kutztown. Lock Haven’s Mark Manno earned a mark of 60’ 1.0” in the weight throw at last season’s championship and looks to repeat as champion, as he currently holds the PSAC’s best toss so far this year. Sophomore Steve Waithe will be defending his title in the triple jump and has already posted three 50-foot jumps this season to rank him in the top five in Division II.

Women's Championship

The Raiders of Shippensburg hold three consecutive and five overall PSAC Indoor titles heading into the 2013 Championship. Slippery Rock came in second a year ago and is the last team besides SU to win a conference title with a win in 2009. One year prior, Shippensburg and Slippery Rock tied for the conference championship title, with both teams earning 110 points. Both Slippery Rock and Kutztown have each earned three league crowns in the championship’s history, and Lock Haven has captured two.

In sprints, Shippensburg’s Caitlin Stuetz and Edinboro’s Tabitha Bernis will battle in the 60m hurdles. Bernis currently holds the conference’s top mark this season with a time of 8.68 seconds, and Stuetz is second in the league at 8.75 seconds. In the straight 60 meters, Mansfield’s Olivia Lopes and East Stroudsburg’s Danielle Smith, who finished third at the 2012 championship, are knotted for first in the PSAC with times of 7.75 seconds.

In the field events, Slippery Rock’s Ashley West and East Stroudsburg’s Christina O’Connor are also tied at the top. Both jumpers have cleared 5’ 8.5” in the high jump and hold NCAA provisional marks. Shippensburg’s Erin Flick is also in the mix as the defending league champion with a 2012-13 season best of 5’ 7”. In the triple jump, Bernis holds the league’s top mark at 39’ 5.25”, with Katie Catania of Kutztown and Mariah Burns of Slippery Rock following close behind, as each have leapt over 38’ 6” this season.

Kutztown’s April Doyle, defending PSAC champion, is on the hunt for PSAC gold in the shot put, as her mark of 44’ 10.75” this season is the only NCAA provisional throw for the conference’s women.

Track’s MVP from the championship a year ago, Katrina Spratford of Shippensburg sits atop the distance competitors in the PSAC in the one mile, 3,000m, and the 5,000m. Her most impressive time thus far this season is a 16:27.15 mark in the 5,000 to earn Spratford a NCAA automatic qualifying time.
