NCAA Woman of the Year Award Information

Lock Haven, Pa. – Women’s swimmer Kayla Shull of Clarion has been selected as the PSAC’s nominee for the prestigious NCAA Woman of the Year award. Shull, a recent Capital One First Team Academic All-All-American on the Women’s At-Large team, is one of several hundred of the finest graduating female student-athletes across the nation that will represent their conferences on the NCAA Woman of the Year ballot.

Shull graduated in May with a perfect 4.0 GPA as a Speech Pathology & Audiology major. She was a two-time NCAA Division II All-American in 2013, placing fifth in the 100 backstroke in a Clarion-record time of 55.40 while also taking 16th in the 200 freestyle.

Named the PSAC Champion Scholar for the second straight year in 2013, and recently named, for the third straight year, to the PSAC Academic Top Ten, Shull helped Clarion take second at the PSAC Championships by earning PSAC titles in the 100 backstroke and 400 medley relay while also taking second in the 50, the 100 freestyle and the 200 medley relay. It was her fourth consecutive PSAC title in the 100 backstroke.

In her career, Shull was a 15-time NCAA Division II All-American, a four-time individual PSAC champion, and a six-time PSAC champion in relays.

Out of the pool, Shull was an active participant in Clarion’s SAAC, the National Student Speech-Language Hearing Association, and the National Student Speech-Language Hearing Association. She participated in nearly a dozen SAAC fundraising community engagement activities during her collegiate years, with proceeds benefiting Make-A-Wish.

Kayla is the daughter of Brian and Cheryl Shull of Franklin, Pa. She has a sister Jillian and a brother Addison. She is a 2009 graduate of Rocky Grove High School.

Shull was selected from the following PSAC nominees; West Chester's Tori Dugan of women's lacrosse, East Stroudsburg's Rose Mascoli of cross country, track and field, and swimming, and IUP's Alyssa Taddie of cross country and track and field.

The Woman of the Year award is in its 23rd year and is designed to honor female senior student-athletes for their collegiate achievements in academics, athletics, leadership and service. A year ago, the PSAC nominated Neely Spence of Shippensburg, with Spence becoming one of the top 30 semifinalists. More

All conference nominees will be released in early August. The selection committee will then choose the top 10 nominees from each division (I, II, II). From among those 30 honorees, the selection committee will determine the top three in each division in mid-September. Finally, the members of the NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics will vote from among the top nine to determine the 2013 NCAA Woman of the Year.

The top 10 honorees from Divisions I, II and III will be honored and the 2013 NCAA Woman of the Year announced at a dinner in Indianapolis on October 20, 2013.
