WOMEN
Hershey, Pa. – The California women’s golf team clinched the 2014 PSAC Women’s Golf Championship title with a team score of 633 (+65) on Sunday at the Hershey Country Club.
 
The Vulcans, who have now won five league titles, were led by Carla Maestre, who shot a 78 on Saturday followed by a 79 on Sunday to finish the tournament at 157 (+15). Maestre finished in a tie with Lacey Bensing of West Chester for second place. Bensing shot a 79 on day one and a 78 on Sunday.
 
Kutztown took second overall in the team standings with a score of 642 (+74). The Golden Bears were led by a 155 (+13) performance by the tournament’s individual medalist Lauren Smith. Smith shot a 75 on Saturday, the lowest score of the tournament, followed by an 80 during Sunday’s round.
 
Gannon finished in third in the team standings with an 83-over par 651, while Mercyhurst finished in fourth with a 659 (+91).

MEN
Hershey, Pa. – The West Chester men’s golf team took home the 2014 PSAC Men’s Golf Championship title on Sunday at the Hershey Country Club with a team total of 604 (+36) and edging IUP by three strokes.

The conference title marks the fourth title in West Chester program history, and the Golden Rams’ first win since 2006. Eric Slawter tied for third overall and led West Chester with a tournament-best 71 on Sunday after shooting 77 on Saturday to finish the tournament with a mark of 148 (+6).  Zachary Boe and Ryan Fogel both shot a 152 (+10) to finish in a four-way tie for sixth along with California’s Jordan Eck and Mercyhurst’s Chris Kupniewski.
 
IUP, winners of six of the last eight PSAC tournaments, finished second with a team score of 607 (+39). Kenneth Sames tied with Slawter for third overall to lead the Crimson Hawks. IUP was in fifth following day one, but bounced-back with a two-day team score of 296 to claim the runner-up hardware. Jack Owen came in fifth with a 151 (+9) on the weekend.
 
Gannon’s Matt Barto won the individual title with a weekend score of 147 (+5). Barto tied Millersville’s Rob Rowe for a tie for first, but defeated Rowe in a playoff round to clinch the individual medalist title.

MERCYHURST MEN, KUTZTOWN WOMEN LEAD AFTER ROUND 1

Hershey, Pa. - The Mercyhurst men and Kutztown women lead the pack at the conclusion of round one of the 2014 PSAC Golf Championships hosted by the Hershey Country Club. 

The Lakers are in the lead with a team score of 300 (+16). All top four scorers, Chris Kupniewski, Blaze Hogan, Cory Vinborg, and Ryan Mehnert, notched a 75 (+4) playing the East Course on day one.
 
California is in second with a 302 (+18) and led by tournament-leader Jordan Eck. Eck and Gannon’s Matt Barto are in a tie for first with a 73 (+2).
 
Defending PSAC Champions Millersville is in third with a 308 (+24), while West Chester is two strokes behind in fourth. IUP, who has won 26 PSAC titles in program history, sits in fifth with a combined score of 311 (+27).
 
On the women’s side, the Golden Bears are in the lead by three strokes with a combined score of 314 (+30), while the Vulcans of California are in second with a team score of 317 (+33). Kutztown's Lauren Smith shot a first-round best 75 (+4). 
 
The Vulcans were led in the first round by a pair of 78 (+7) scores from Carla Maestre and Rachel Lim. Also in a tie for second are Gannon’s Eva Schonander and Mercyhurst’s Georgia Capotis.
 
Defending PSAC Champions Gannon is in third with a team score of 320 (+36), while Mercyhurst sits in fourth with a 328 (+45).
 
Play concludes Sunday with tee times beginning at 10:30 a.m. The men will start from hole one, while the women will start at hole ten.

PREVIEW STORY
 
Hershey, Pa. - The PSAC Men's and Women's Golf Championships will take place in Hershey, Pa. this weekend. Nine women's teams and eight men’s teams will compete for PSAC titles on the Hershey Country Club East Course.
 
Both the men and women will complete 18 holes on both Saturday and Sunday to make-up the two-round 36-hole tournament. Tee-times are scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday and 10:30 a.m. on Sunday. The women will tee-off from hole No. 1 on Saturday and hole No. 10 on Sunday. The men are slated to start from hole No. 10 on Saturday and hole No. 1 on Sunday.
 
Gannon claimed the 2013 women’s title to mark the program’s second crown in the last three seasons. California was second to Gannon by just two strokes. The Lady Knights finished the two-day tournament with a combined team score of 648 (+80).

2013 individual medalist Morgan Miller of Seton Hill returns to the tournament. Miller shot a 154 (+12) resulting from a day one score of 76 (+5) and a second day mark of 78 (+7).  
 
The next highest finisher from last season that will return to the green is Mercyhurst’s Gaelin Carrig, who finished in a tie for third with a two-day total of 158 (+16).

Defending PSAC Athlete and Freshman of the Year Carla Maestre of California will return for her second appearance at the PSAC Championship. Last spring, Maestre finished 44th overall at the NCAA Division II Women’s Golf Championship with a four-round total of 312 (+28). 
 
The Millersville Marauders captured the men’s title a season ago, winning by two strokes over California and marking their fourth PSAC title in program history. The Marauders turned-in a team score of 593 (+17) on the Hershey Links Course to win the crown. Millersville returns its top two golfers from last season, including individual medalist Conor Gilbert. Gilbert finished the championship with a 143 (-1), while teammate Rob Rowe came-in third with a 145 (+1).

Prior to 2013, IUP had won the previous six PSAC Championship titles. The Crimson Hawks return four players from last season; Brett Geiser, Kenneth Sames, Max Kirsch, and Jack Owen. IUP finished in a tie for third with West Chester, as both teams completed the tournament with a combined scored of 597 (+21).
 
California returns Jordan Eck, who finished in fourth a year ago with a 146 (+2) to lead the Vulcans to their second-straight runner-up finish at the PSAC Championship.
