Lock Haven, Pa. – Kutztown’s Sam Costello was selected by the league’s head coaches as the 2014 PSAC Women’s Soccer Offensive Athlete of the Year alongside the PSAC Defensive Athlete of the Year Becca Costello of Edinboro. IUP’s Victoria Crawford was named the PSAC Freshman of the Year, while East Stroudsburg head coach Rob Berkowitz took PSAC Coach of the Year honors.

Senior Sam Costello currently leads the conference in points per game from 1.6 with 10 goals and four assists in 15 games this season. She notched the game winning goal in Tuesday’s 2-0 PSAC Quarterfinal win over Edinboro to lead Kutztown to the Semifinals for the first time since shutting out Slippery Rock 4-0 in 2011. Costello has ripped 67 shots for 4.47 a shots per game average and has posted four game winning goals this season. Over her career, Costello, a three-time All-PSAC honoree, has amassed 24 goals and 20 assists for 68 points. She is the first-ever PSAC Offensive Athlete of the Year from Kutztown.

Becca Costello lead an Edinboro defense that allowed 1.16 goals per game this year with 22 goals on 210 shots and 91 shots on goal. She has scored three goals and assisted on three more for a total of nine points this season. Two of her marks this year have come from penalty kick opportunities, including a penalty kick game-winner against Notre Dame a week ago. The four-time All-PSAC selection is the first Defensive or Offensive PSAC Athlete of the Year hailing from Edinboro.

Crawford finished her rookie season with six goals and three assists for 15 points to rank in the PSAC top 25 in points per game with .79. All of her points earned this season came against conference opponents, including scoring the game-winner in her collegiate debut against Lock Haven. She took 40 shots and put 22 on goal this season and started all 19 games. Crawford is the first PSAC Freshman of the Year from IUP since Sarah Romasco and Lauren Mizik won the accolade back-to-back in 2006 and 2007, respectively.

Berkowitz led the Warriors to their first PSAC regular season title in program history and holds an 18-game winning streak heading into the PSAC Championship Semifinals. Berkowitz, who has now led the Warriors to four PSAC Semifinals in his eight years as head coach, was also named the PSAC Coach of the Year in 2007. The Warriors are currently ranked No. 3 in the NSCAA Division II women’s soccer poll, marking the highest national ranking in program history.

Of the All-Conference honorees three have been named All-Conference players all four years of their careers; Becca Costello, Erin Hogan of California and Chelsea Crockett of California. Another four selections have earned All-PSAC honors for the third time in their collegiate campaigns; Sam Costello, Brittney Kuhns of IUP, Mani Brueckner of Gannon, Diana Malagna of Kutztown and Liz Debo of Edinboro.
