Mercyhurst Wins Singles; Edinboro Takes Men's Doubles; California Wins Women's Doubles
West Chester, Pa. – Two individuals and two pairs of doubles champions were crowned at the 2014 PSAC Individual Tennis Championship on Sunday afternoon in West Chester, Pa.
Freshman
Nenad Terzic of Mercyhurst captured the 2014 PSAC Men's Singles Championship, becoming the first Laker player to win the league's singles title since Mercyhurst joined the conference in 2008. Terzic downed West Chester's
Lars Kristiansen 8-0 in the first round of competition. With a 6-2 victory, Terzic upset No. 2 seed and defending singles champion
Varun Desai of Kutztown. In the semifinals he defeated Bloomsburg’s
Gilberto Macchado 6-2 before finally defeating Millersville's
Jody Sambrick 7-6 (7-3) in the championship match.
Freshman
Saoia Gomez won the PSAC Women’s Singles Championship crown with a 6-0 sweep of West Chester’s
Clair Uhle. Gomez got to the championship round after defeating No. 1 seeded
Tanya Timko of IUP 7-5. Gomez defeated No. 3 seed
Kiefer Shaw of California 9-7 in the first round, followed by a 6-0 sweep of Clarion’s
Megan Bettwy in the second. Gomez then beat IUP’s
Lucie Rey 7-5 in the quarterfinals.
Edinboro’s
Bruno Borja and
Brandon Romain defeated teammates
Matias Aignasse and
Juan Estepa 6-3 to clinch the PSAC Men’s Doubles Championship title. Borja and Romain handed Mercyhurst duo
Travis Beck and Terzic a 7-5 loss in the opening round before sweeping Macchado and
Nenyi Micah 6-0 in the semifinals.
The women’s doubles also saw two pairs of teammates battling one another for the conference crown. California’s Shaw and
Jesse Burrell prevailed over No. 1 seeded Rey and
Ramona Czakon 6-4 to win the title. No. 3 seeded Shaw and Burrell defeated their Seton Hill foes in the opening round 6-1 before sweeping a Millersville duo 6-0 in the quarterfinals. Shaw and Burrell defeated West Chester’s
Maddy Shaak and Uhle in the semifinals 6-4.
PLAY POSTPONED UNTIL SUNDAY: SINGLES MATCHES MOVE TO ONE SET
West Chester, Pa. – Due to the inclement weather, only seven women’s singles matches in the first round of the PSAC Men’s and Women’s Individual Tennis Championship were played on Saturday at West Chester University.
Play was delayed multiple times throughout the day until the championship committee deemed the courts unplayable. Play will resume on Sunday, September 14 at 8:00 am.
The women’s first round was shortened early Saturday afternoon and the seven completed contests were played as eight-game pro set matches. The remaining women’s singles first round matches will be played as eight set matches. All following matches will be determined by one set. All men’s singles matches will also be played as one set. Both men’s and women’s doubles matches will be played in the original format.
IUP’s
Raquel Gonzalez and
Sara Ruiz of Seton Hill will play one another in the second round on Sunday after defeating their first round opponents 8-2 and 8-1, respectively. California’s
Lucie Rey won her first round match 8-3 and Seton Hill’s
Isadora Knezevic won 8-1. Rey and Knezevic will face each other in the second round. West Chester’s
Maddy Shaak swept her first round opponent 8-0 and will play No. 2 seed
Ramona Czakon of California in the second round. IUP’s
Luisa Von Agris won 8-1 in the first round, as did Edinboro’s
Oranza Carrillo.

West Chester, Pa. – The PSAC Individual Tennis Championship for both men and women will be contested this weekend at West Chester University. Play will begin on Saturday, September 13, at 10:00 a.m. and run through Sunday afternoon.
Men's Singles Bracket
The men's singles bracket consists of three players from last season's semifinalist teams (Edinboro, Kutztown, Mercyhurst, West Chester) plus two athletes from the remaining teams.
Defending PSAC Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Year,
Matias Aignasse of Edinboro, is this year’s No. 1 seed. The junior is making his first appearance in the PSAC Men’s Singles Championship and will play Kutztown’s
Matt Maguire in the first round.
Kutztown’s
Varun Desai is the No. 2 seed in the singles bracket. The senior swept the 2013 Individual Championships, earning both the singles and doubles titles. Last year, Desai defeated Mercyhurst’s
Travis Beck 6-0, 6-2 in the finals. Beck holds the No. 3 seed in the 2014 bracket.
Mercyhurst’s
Robert Rizea secured the singles No. 4 seed for the second consecutive season. Rizea is looking to avenge a 2013 quarterfinal loss to eventual champion Desai.
A total of eight athletes are repeats from the 2013 men's singles bracket.
Men's Doubles Bracket
Eight double's teams, comprised of one team from each school and two from the previous year's top two teams (Kutztown, Edinboro) make up the men's doubles bracket.
Aignasse and
Juan Estepa are the No. 1 seed in the Doubles Championship. The Edinboro duo are making their first appearance together in the doubles bracket, and will face Beck and
Nenad Terzic of Mercyhurst in the first round.
Desai and Maguire of Kutztown are the No. 2 seed. Desai won the 2013 Men’s Double Championship alongside teammate Rushi Amin, defeating Bloomsburg’s
Mike DiSanto and
Denis Ikeriji, 8-4.
Women's Singles Bracket
On the women's side, the singles bracket is a 32-player draw consisting of three players from each of the 2013 postseason qualifying teams (California, Bloomsburg, West Chester, IUP) plus two athletes from the remaining teams.
Tanya Timko of IUP, the reigning PSAC Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Year, earned the 2014 top seed. The senior advanced to the 2013 Quarterfinals, losing to eventual champion Luci Sipkova of California.
California’s
Ramona Czakon is the No. 2 seed. Czakon was the 2013 runner-up, falling to Sipkova, 6-7(4), 6-2, 10-2.
Two newcomers round out the top four seeds. Sophomores
Kiefer Shaw of California and
Sophie Butland of IUP are seeded No. 3 and No. 4, respectively.
Seeds five through eight went to IUP's
Raquel Gonzalez, California's
Lucie Rey, Mercyhurst's
Sarah Baich, and Edinboro's
Oranza Carrillo.
A total of twelve athletes are repeats from the 2013 women’s singles bracket.
Women's Doubles Bracket
The 16-team doubles bracket consists of two pairs from the previous year's top two squads (California, IUP) plus one doubles team from the remaining teams.
The top seed consists of California teammates Rey, the 2013 Women’s Doubles Champion with Sipkova, and
Ramona Czakon, the 2013 runner-up with Alexandra Borgenhoff.
Another Vulcan duo,
Kiefer Shaw and
Jesse Burrell, is the No. 3 seed.
IUP grabbed the No. 2 and No. 4 seeds in the doubles bracket. Timko and
Luise Von Agris are in the second slot, with teammates
Sophia Butland and
Raquel Gonzalez rounding out the top four.
