Championship Game: Slippery Rock 2, Millersville 1

6023

Erie, Pa. - The Slippery Rock University men’s soccer team claimed its second PSAC Championship in three years on Sunday afternoon. It was also The Rock’s third PSAC title since 2009.

The Marauders struck early, scoring just 1:14 into the championship game. The goal came off the foot of Tanner Brenize and was assisted by Chase Flickinger. The tally started initially with a corner kick and was eventually put in the middle of the box before it ended up in the back of the net.

At the half, the 1-0 lead for the Marauders held through the first 45 minutes. Shots were nearly even in the first half, with Millersville holding a slight 10-9 edge.

The one-goal advantage would continue to be enough through nearly the first 20 minutes of the second half, but SRU would even things up at 63:52. Ryan Lutke had a free kick that he rocketed through the box, off a Millersville defender, and into the back of the net.

It would be only a few minutes that the game would remain tied, as Peter Boylan carried the ball into the box and

an attempted clear by the Marauders came right back to him, and Boylan would take advantage of the opportunity, making it 2-1 in favor of The Rock.

The 2-1 score would end up being the final, as Millersville would never be able to draw even. With the game-winning goal, Boylan was named the PSAC Championship MVP.

The NCAA Selection Show for men's soccer will be tomorrow, November 9 at 6:00 p.m. on ncaa.com.

CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW

No. 1 Mercyhurst vs. No. 4 Slippery Rock: Live Stats

No. 2 Millersville vs. No. 3 Bloomsburg: Live Stats

Erie, Pa. - For the fourth straight year, the PSAC Men’s Soccer Championship will be played at Mercyhurst University, as the Lakers won their fourth consecutive regular season PSAC Championship in dramatic fashion against Millersville the past weekend. The Marauders, who were just eight seconds away from hosting the tournament themselves, come in as the second seed. As the top two seeds, Mercyhurst and Millersville earned a bye in the first round and will be playing their first games in nearly a week on Friday.

Facing Millersville will be the number three seed, Bloomsburg. The Huskies advanced past Lock Haven in the quarterfinals behind two goals, including one in overtime to clinch the win, from Austin Transue. Transue is the second leading point scorer in the PSAC, trailing only Millersville’s Jaime Vazquez. Bloomsburg is 14-4 this year, winning the most games in school history. BU goalkeeper Jared Ott has the fourth-best goals against average in the PSAC.

The Marauders are led by Vazquez, who had 40 points and is averaging more than a goal per game this year. In addition to having the top goal-scorer in the league, Millersville also has the stingiest defense, allowing just 12 goals in 17 games.

The meeting this year between Bloomsburg and Millersville happened during the first week of conference play in early September. In that meeting, Millersville won 3-0.

Slippery Rock will face the regular season champions from Mercyhurst after defeating California in the PSAC Quarterfinals. The Rock won 1-0 after a late goal from Matt Sangermano. SRU had the top scoring offense in the league this year, scoring 37 goals in 18 games. Led by the top scoring attack, Slippery Rock had the second-best goal differential in the league (1.0).

Mercyhurst comes into the tournament having won four straight games and have not lost in seven games. In that seven game stretch, Mercyhurst has registered four shutouts. The Lakers have not lost a conference match since September 12.

When Slippery Rock and Mercyhurst met earlier this season, the Lakers won 1-0 on a made penalty shot from Sten Marcson.
