Edinboro Leads Dixon Trophy Race
Complete Dixon Trophy Standings
Lock Haven, Pa. - Edinboro University sits atop the 2015-16 Dixon Trophy standings following completion of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference fall championship season.
The trophy is awarded at the end of each academic year to the league's most successful program based on conference playoff and/or regular-season finish. Standings are compiled based on average score for all PSAC Championship sports each school sponsors. Equal to its total membership, each conference sport champion is awarded 18 points and a descending point value is given for respective place finishes. The second- through last-place values vary depending on the number of teams that sponsor the sport.
Edinboro possesses an average score of 13.00, participating in five of the nine fall championship sports. A conference championship in women’s cross country combined with a runner-up finish in women’s soccer and a PSAC West Championship in volleyball were all key components to the Fighting Scots sitting atop the standings.
Shippensburg ranks second with an average of 12.69 points, followed by Slippery Rock at 12.07. Bloomsburg sits in fourth place with a 12.06 average, with California (11.38), Kutztown (11.19), defending champions West Chester (10.89) and East Stroudsburg (10.08) rounding out the schools in double-digit scoring.
With the aforementioned success in women’s sports, Edinboro has the highest average on the women’s side. The Fighting Scots’ average score is 16.83, nearly three points higher than the next highest female average (Shippensburg).
Slippery Rock won the PSAC Football Championship Game and the men’s soccer championship and sits comfortably on top of the standings for the men. The Rock averages 17.00 points on the men’s side, more than three points more than IUP, who sits in second place for the men.
In its 21st year of existence, the award is named in honor of F. Eugene Dixon, Jr., former chairman of Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education's Board of Governors. Seven different institutions have won the Dixon Trophy. Shippensburg has laid claim to the honor a league-best seven times, while Lock Haven and Bloomsburg have three titles apiece. California and West Chester each have two Dixon Trophy victories. Kutztown, Slippery Rock, and Millersville have each won one Dixon Trophy.
Seven PSAC Championships will be contested in the 2015-16 winter season: men's and women's basketball, men's and women's swimming, men's and women's indoor track & field and wrestling. The next update of the Dixon Trophy standings will be released following the basketball championships in early March.
