West Chester Maintains Lead for Dixon Trophy
Complete Standings
Lock Haven, Pa. - West Chester University sits atop the standings in the quest for the 2014-15 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Dixon Trophy. The trophy is awarded at the end of each academic year to the league’s most successful program based on conference playoff and/or regular-season finish.
The winner of the Dixon Trophy is the school which compiles the top average score for all PSAC Championship sports the school sponsors. Equal to its total membership, each conference sport champion is awarded 18 points and a descending point value is given for respective place finishes. The second-through last-place values vary depending on the number of teams that sponsor the sport.
West Chester has amassed and average score of 14.0, over a point and a half average ahead of second-place California (12.46). Slippery Rock at 12.27 is in third place, followed by Shippensburg (11.46) and Bloomsburg (11.27) to round out the top five.
The Golden Rams led at the conclusion of the fall championships, as well, when they had registered a 13.39 point average. Championship titles in men's and women's swimming and a runner-up finish in women's basketball were the strong components to elevate their average during the winter season. Those showings added to fall championships in field hockey and men's golf, and third-place totals in football, volleyball and women's soccer.
Staying near the top of the standings, California added its third PSAC Championship during the 2014-15 campaign with title in women's basketball. The Vulcans also added fourth and fifth place finishes in women's and men's indoor track & field, respectively.
Slippery Rock jumped up one spot with runner-up placements in both men's and women's indoor track & field, while Shippensburg stayed in the hunt with titles in each of those two sports. Bloomsburg stayed in fifth place, aided by a runner up in women's swimming and third-place totals in women's basketball and indoor track & field.
IUP, which claimed the highest ascension from the fall through the winter, went from 11th to eighth place. The Crimson Hawks netted a runner-up in men's basketball and swimming, and third-place points in women's swimming and basketball.
The Dixon Trophy, now in its 20th year of existence, is named in honor of F. Eugene Dixon, Jr., former chairman of Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education’s Board of Governors. West Chester is seeking its second Dixon title, trying to repeat its performance from the 2012-13 season. California, the defending champion, is hoping to claim the trophy for a third time. Shippensburg has won the most all-sports crowns with seven, followed by Bloomsburg and Lock Haven with three apiece. In addition to West Chester, Slippery Rock, Kutztown and Millersville each have one title.
Seven PSAC Championships remain for the 2014-15 campaign: men and women's outdoor track and field, men's and women's tennis, baseball, softball, and women's lacrosse. The winner of the 2014-15 Dixon Trophy will be released following the completion of the spring championships in early May.
