Lock Haven, Pa. – West Chester’s
Dylan Tice and Seton Hill’s
Nick Sell have been named their respective Division’s PSAC Baseball Athletes of the Year, as selected by the league’s head coaches. Mercyhurst’s
Jon Klein and Millersville’s
Chris Murphy are the PSAC Pitchers of the Year, while Shippensburg’s
Gabe Mosser is the PSAC East Freshman of the Year and
Tyler Walters of Slippery Rock is the PSAC West Freshman of the Year. West Chester’s Jad Parachniak and Mercyhurst’s Joe Spano have both earned PSAC Coach of the Year honors.
Tice led one of the East’s top teams with a .450 batting average heading into the PSAC Tournament. He has amassed 58 hits, 53 runs, 29 RBI, and nine homeruns so far this season. The junior’s batting average led the Eastern Division at the end of the regular season, while his .564 on-base percentage led the PSAC. The first-time All-PSAC selection is the first PSAC Baseball East Athlete of the Year from West Chester since Joe Wendle garnered the accolade in 2012.
Sell is the first PSAC West Baseball Athlete of the Year to hail from Seton Hill since the Griffins joined the league in 2013. The senior currently leads the PSAC in four categories: batting average (.458), runs (57), RBI (82), and slugging percentage (1.077). Sell’s 25 homeruns rank him second in the league, while his 0.529 on-base percentage ranks him third.
Murphy, a three-time East Pitcher of the Year honoree, leads the PSAC East and ranks 16
th in Division II with a 1.83 ERA over 69.0 innings of work. The senior has surrendered just 60 hits heading into the conference tournament and has accumulated 56 strikeouts. The right-hander concluded the regular season with a perfect 10-0 slate while allowing just 16 runs. Murphy is the only Millersville athlete to have won the PSAC East Pitcher of the Year accolade.
Klein leads the PSAC and ranks ninth in Division II with a 1.23 ERA. Klein has surrendered 30 hits and seven earned runs in his seven starts this season. He is holding opponents to a .168 batting average – the lowest average for a pitcher in the conference. The PSAC First Team selection is the second consecutive PSAC West Pitcher of the Year from Mercyhurst, as Dan Altavilla won the award a season ago.
Mosser ranks in the top five in five PSAC East pitching categories. In conference action, the freshman’s 42 strikeouts ranked third, while his 37 hits allowed was good for second. Mosser surrendered just 16 earned runs during league games, good for fourth in the East. Mosser is the first Freshman of the Year to hail from Shippensburg since Matt Wright earned the accolade in 2006 when the Raiders were in the Western Division.
Walters’ .379 batting average played a large part in Slippery Rock being the PSAC West’s second-ranked offense. The rookie catcher contributed 47 runs, 36 RBI, and 12 homeruns during the regular season. Walters is the first Freshman of the Year from The Rock since Ryan Ogelsby garnered the accolade in 2011.
Prachniak, in his fourth season at the helm of the Golden Rams’ baseball program, led West Chester to its fourth consecutive PSAC playoff appearance. He has guided the Golden Rams to a 119-63-1 mark over the last four seasons, good for a .653 winning percentage. Prachniak also won the PSAC Baseball East Coach of the Year accolade in 2012, after which he guided West Chester to the NCAA Division II National Championship.
Spano, in his 16
th season with the Lakers, guided Mercyhurst to the PSAC West regular season title for the first time since 2012. Spano, who has accumulated nearly 500 wins at Mercyhurst, has led the Lakers to 11 consecutive winning seasons and five straight 30-win seasons, both program records.
In the PSAC East there are two repeat first team honorees, both hailing from the Millersville pitching staff; both Murphy and
