PREVIEW
York, Pa. - The York County YMCA and Graham Aquatic Center will host the 2016 PSAC Swimming Championships from Thursday, February 18, through Sunday, February 21. This year's event marks the 58th year for the men's championship, and the 41st year for the women's championship.
MEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP
West Chester is seeking its 18th consecutive conference championship and its 29th overall. However, West Chester's 17-straight PSAC titles isn't the longest winning streak in league history. Clarion won the conference crown from 1971-1989 spanning 19 years. Clarion's last conference title came in 1998 after winning the crown the previous three seasons. The Golden Eagles have earned 24 conference titles, while Shippensburg has four and Slippery Rock won in 1966.
West Chester scored 977.5 points at the 2015 PSAC Championship.
Four-time NCAA Division II Champion and two-time PSAC Men's Swimmer of the Year Victor Polyakov of West Chester returns to York after winning three individual races and setting two all-time league records at the 2015 PSAC Swimming Championship. He enters this year’s meet as the league’s top-seeded swimmer in the 1000 freestyle, 200 freestyle, 500 freestyle, and the 1650 freestyle.
Polyakov’s teammate Mike Oliver set the PSAC Championship record in the 200 breaststroke last year with a time of 2:00.17. Oliver bested that time this year with a mark of 1:59.79, but is the second seed in the event, as Bloomsburg’s Jake Harner has a time of 1:58.85 this season.
Oliver is the top seed in the 400 IM, the second seed in the 100 breaststroke, and the third seed in the 200 IM.
Harner leads the way for last year’s third place finishers from Bloomsburg. In addition to the top seed in the 200 breaststroke, he is the top seed in the 200 IM, setting a conference record this season with a time of 1:48.00. He is also the top seed in the 100 breaststroke, where he again set a conference record this year (53.85).
Harner’s Husky teammate Eric Usbeck is the top seed in the 50 freestyle, leading five BU swimmers who set Division II B marks in that event. He is also the top seed in the 100 freestyle.
Seeded second in the 100 freestyle is Yuri Fernandes. Fernandes helped IUP to a runner-up finish last season, winning the 100 freestyle in 45.69. He is also seeded second in the 200 IM, third in the 400 IM, ninth in the 200 freestyle, and sixth in the 200 butterfly.
West Chester will also send the following top seeded swimmers: Luke Maguire in the 100 butterfly (48.66), Dan Sokman in the 100 backstroke (50.54) and Eric Long in the 200 butterfly (1:51.11). Long set the PSAC Championship record and pool record in 2015 (1:49.25).
Bloomsburg’s A.J. Brady will be the top seed in the 200 backstroke (1:50.85).
In the relay events, Bloomsburg owns the top-seeded times in the 200 freestyle (1:20.67) and 400 freestyle (3:01.18), while West Chester is ranked first in the 200 medley (1:29.82), 400 medley (3:17.36), and 800 freestyle (6:38.00).
