Edinboro Holds Lead in Dixon Trophy Standings
Dixon Trophy Standings Through Fall '16
LOCK HAVEN, Pa. --- Edinboro University sits atop the 2016-17 Dixon Trophy standings following completion of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference fall championship season.
The trophy is awarded at the end of each academic year to the league's most successful program based on conference playoff and/or regular-season finish. Standings are compiled based on average score for all PSAC Championship sports each school sponsors. Equal to its total membership, each conference sport champion is awarded 18 points and a descending point value is given for respective place finishes. The second- through last-place values vary depending on the number of teams that sponsor the sport.
Edinboro possesses an average score of 13.50, participating in five of the nine fall championship sports. The Fighting Scots complied double-digits in all five sports. EU’s women’s soccer team claimed the No. 3 seed in the tournament while its volleyball team grabbed No. 2. The Fighting Scots men’s cross country team finished third in the championship.
Shippensburg ranks second with an average of 12.35 points after winning both cross country titles. IUP ranks third at 12.07 after an appearance in the volleyball semifinals and an impressive season on the gridiron. Kutztown claims fourth with a 11.86 average while Bloomsburg and California are tied for fifth at 11.75. West Chester (11.72) and East Stroudsburg (10.88) rounding out the schools in double-digit scoring.
Shippensburg and Gannon are tied on the women’s side with an average of 13.75. SU claimed the women’s cross country championship and finished as the runner-up in the field hockey tournament. The Lady Knights won titles in volleyball and golf.
Edinboro paces the men’s side with an average of 14.25 following a third-place finish in the cross country championship and a strong performance during the football campaign. EU leads IUP by 0.08 points (14.17). The Crimson Hawks won the men’s golf championship in October.
In its 22nd year of existence, the award is named in honor of F. Eugene Dixon, Jr., former chairman of Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education's Board of Governors. Seven different institutions have won the Dixon Trophy. Shippensburg has laid claim to the honor a league-best seven times, while Lock Haven, West Chester and Bloomsburg have three titles apiece. California has two Dixon Trophy victories. Kutztown, Slippery Rock, and Millersville have each won one Dixon Trophy.
Seven PSAC Championships will be contested in the 2016-17 winter season: men's and women's basketball, men's and women's swimming, men's and women's indoor track & field and wrestling. The next update of the Dixon Trophy standings will be released following the basketball championships in early March.
