PSAC Winter Top 10

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Pennsylvania State Athlete Conference is pleased to announce its Winter 2016 Top 10 Award recipients, chosen by the league's sports information directors. The PSAC Top 10 Awards are designed to recognize student-athletes who excel in both the classroom and in athletic competition.

Initiated in the 1997-98 academic year, the Top 10 Award is given to five males and five females in each athletic season: fall, winter, and spring. The Winter 2016 award winners are Sabrina Anderson of Slippery Rock, Micah Cattell of Edinboro, Tess Hayward of West Chester, Morgan Huegel of California, Megan Lundy of Shippensburg, Michael Pavasko of Clarion, Phil Sprenkle of Lock Haven, Emma Sullivan of Kutztown, Travis Toth of East Stroudsburg, and Alex Zanella of California.

It is the third time that Anderson and Zanella are receiving PSAC Top 10 recognition, while Cattell, Huegel, and Lundy are all being honored for the second time in their careers.

Listed below are the biographies for the Winter 2016 PSAC Top 10 Award winners:

Sabrina Anderson, Slippery Rock University
Indoor Track and Field - Junior
Major: Exercise Science (Minor: Business Administration)
GPA: 3.946

Anderson broke the all-time PSAC record in the pentathlon this season, scoring 3,808 points at the national meet, finishing fifth in the country, and earning Division II All-American status. She was a two-time PSAC Champion this winter, winning the pentathlon for the second straight year and taking home top prize in the 60m hurdles. Anderson was named the Most Outstanding Overall Athlete at the PSAC Indoor Championships, in addition to earning PSAC Field Athlete of the Year honors. She was a 2015 CoSIDA  Academic All-American and, despite never redshirting, is already a senior academically.

Micah Cattell, Edinboro University
Swimming - Senior
Major: Childhood/Special Education
GPA: 4.0

Cattell was the PSAC’s Champion Scholar in men’s swimming this season and was a 2015 College Swimming Coaches Association of American (CSCAA) Honorable Mention Scholar All-American. He competed in seven events at the 2016 PSAC Swimming Championships, highlighted by a fourth place finish in the 800-yard freestyle relay. On multiple occasions, he has been named an Edinboro and PSAC Scholar-Athlete, and he is also involved with the PSAC’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

Tess Hayward, West Chester University
Swimming - Junior
Major: Education
GPA: 3.79

Hayward was dominant this winter in the pool, earning nearly every possible swimming accolade. Hayward won all four events in which she competed during the PSAC Championships, taking home gold in the 200 freestyle, the 500 freestyle, the 1000 freestyle, and the 1650 freestyle. She would go on to the national meet and become a three-time All-American with a third place performance in the 500, a fourth place finish in the 1000, and a sixth place finish in the 1650. Hayward led the Golden Rams to their 10th straight conference crown, and earned both Most Outstanding Swimmer at the PSAC Championships and PSAC Swimmer of the Year honors.

Morgan Huegel, California University
Indoor Track and Field - Senior
Major: Mathematics (Secondary Education)
GPA: 4.0

Huegel won the PSAC Champion Scholar Award this winter for the second time in his career. He also earned the honor in 2013 for cross country. The senior now holds the California school record in the 800m run, posting a time of 1:53.27, the second-fastest time in the league this year. Huegel was a CoSIDA Academic Second Team All-American in 2014, he is a four-time U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic selection, and a two-time USTFCCCA All-Region selection.

Megan Lundy, Shippensburg University
Indoor Track and Field - Senior
Major: Early Childhood Education
GPA: 4.0

Lundy was the 2015-16 PSAC Champion Scholar for Indoor Track and Field. She was also a PSAC Champion, anchoring the 4x400 relay team that took home the top prize at the conference meet. Individually, she finished in third place in the 400m, which was the fourth All-PSAC (top three) finish of her career. She is a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-American Second Team selection, a three-time NCAA qualifier, and a 14-time PSAC place-winner. She has All-PSAC finishes in every 400m and 4x400 relay she has competed in at a conference meet and has nine PSAC titles (indoors and outdoors).

Michael Pavasko, Clarion University
Wrestling - Senior
Major: Accounting
GPA: 3.690

Pavasko was an NCAA qualifier this season and the Eastern Wrestling League Champion at 174 lbs. The senior is a three-time Clarion Scholar-Athlete and has finished in the top four at the PSAC Championships three times in his career. Pavasko won a match at the NCAA Division I National Championships at Madison Square Garden. He also had key victories in Clarion wins over #26 Rider and #24 Pittsburgh.

Phil Sprenkle, Lock Haven University
Wrestling - Senior
Major: Sports Administration and Business
GPA: 3.807

Sprenkle won a pair of matches at the NCAA Championships this winter, finishing the season 20-9 and finishing his career at 74-46. Sprenkle missed the majority of his senior year with an injury, but was prolific when on the mat. He finished in third place at the Eastern Wrestling League Championships and qualified for the first NCAA Championships of his career.

Emma Sullivan, Kutztown University
Indoor Track and Field - Senior
Major: Communication Design
GPA: 3.90

Sullivan won the PSAC Indoor Championship in the pole vault this season and holds the school record with a mark of 12’10” that was set at nationals. Sullivan is a 2016 All-American and holds the Kutztown pole vault record both indoors and outdoors. She has been an U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Atlantic Region honoree on five occasions and is a two-time USTFCCCA All-Academic. She has also earned the Division II Athletic Directors Association Academic Achievement Award.

Travis Toth, East Stroudsburg University
Indoor Track and Field - Senior (Graduate Student)
Major: Exercise Science
GPA: 3.862 (Graduate) / 3.523 (Undergraduate)

Toth was a Second Team All-American during the indoor track and field season, placing 10th at the national meet in the weight throw. It was his second time earning All-American honors, as he finished eighth in the hammer throw on the 2014 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. He was the PSAC Champion in the weight throw with a mark of 60’7.25”. He was the only athlete in the conference to clear 60 feet, and he did it on five separate occasions. Over his career, he is a three-time PSAC Champion and a two-time PSAC Runner-up.

Alex Zanella, California University
Indoor Track and Field - Senior (Graduate Student)
Major: Reading Specialist (Graduate) / PreK-4 Education (Undergraduate)
GPA: 3.93 (Graduate) / 3.96 (Undergraduate)

Zanella recorded the fastest time in the mile in the league this winter, running 4:57.84. She then went on to successfully defend her mile title at the PSAC Championships and win another crown as the anchor on the winning DMR team. Overall, Zanella is a nine-time PSAC Champion and holds three school records. She was named the PSAC’s Most Outstanding Track Athlete of the both the PSAC Indoor and Outdoor Championships in 2015. Last year, she was also named a CoSIDA First Team Academic All-American.
