Shippensburg Holds Dixon Trophy Lead Following Winter Championships
LOCK HAVEN, Pa. --- Shippensburg University sits atop the 2016-17 Dixon Trophy standings following completion of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference winter championship season.
The trophy is awarded at the end of each academic year to the league's most successful program based on conference playoff and/or regular-season finish. Standings are compiled based on average score for all PSAC Championship sports each school sponsors. Equal to its total membership, each conference sport champion is awarded 18 points and a descending point value is given for respective place finishes. The second- through last-place values vary depending on the number of teams that sponsor the sport.
SU sports an average score of 12.82, participating in all seven of the winter championship sports and in all but one of the fall championship sports. The Raiders swept the indoor track and field championships while the men’s basketball team hoisted the PSAC title. SU’s women’s basketball team claimed the No. 1 seed in the East and advanced to the semifinals.
IUP sits in second with an average of 12.42 points after winning the women’s basketball championship. West Chester ranks third at 12.27 points after sweeping the swimming titles. Bloomsburg claims fourth at a 11.88 clip while California rounds out the top five at 11.27.
SU paces the women’s side with a 14.86 average while IUP leads the men’s side at 13.25.
In its 22nd year of existence, the award is named in honor of F. Eugene Dixon, Jr., former chairman of Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education's Board of Governors. Seven different institutions have won the Dixon Trophy. Shippensburg has laid claim to the honor a league-best seven times, while Lock Haven, West Chester and Bloomsburg have three titles apiece. California has two Dixon Trophy victories. Kutztown, Slippery Rock, and Millersville have each won one Dixon
Trophy.
Seven PSAC Championships will be contested in the 2017 spring season: men's and women's outdoor track & field, softball, women’s lacrosse, baseball and men’s and women’s tennis. The final update of the Dixon Trophy standings will be released following the baseball championship in mid-May.
