Sleva, Glover Headline PSAC Men's Basketball All-Conference Teams
LOCK HAVEN, Pa. --- IUP senior Anthony Glover and Shippensburg senior Dustin Sleva have been named the Pennsylvania State Athlete Conference Men’s Basketball Athletes of the Year, the league announced Thursday afternoon in conjunction with the release of the men’s basketball all-conference teams.
All-conference teams and major award winners are determined by a vote of the league’s head coaches.
Glover is the fourth consecutive Crimson Hawk to garner the PSAC West Athlete of the Year award and it marks the 10th time that an IUP representative has won it. Glover sits ninth in the league in scoring (20.1) while scoring 20 points on 16 occasions. The senior scored a career-high 34 points in an 89-85 win against Slippery Rock on Jan. 8. Glover is IUP’s record holder in single season three-pointers made and ranks seventh in NCAA Division II with 100. Glover has been clutch all season and sits amongst the top of the league in three-pointers made per game (3.4), three-point percentage (24.2) and free-throw percentage (84.5). Glover has scored 584 points on the year and is poised to become one of nine IUP players to score 600 points in a season.
Sleva was named the PSAC East Athlete of the Year for the second consecutive season. The senior is the first athlete to accomplish the feat since 2002-03 (Ramzee Stanton, West Chester). Sleva and the Raiders are 23-6 on the season and will battle Gannon in a semifinal Saturday, March 3 at 1 PM in East Stroudsburg, Pa. The Pittsburgh, Pa., native, is tied for third in the conference in scoring at 21.5 points per game and is one of three PSAC players with more than 10 rebounds per game (10.7). Sleva is tied for eighth in field goal percentage (51.2) and is three-time first-team all-conference representative. He is seventh in the conference in blocks (38) while averaging 34.3 minutes per contest.
Edinboro’s Pat Cleary earned the PSAC West Coach of the Year award for the first time in his career and is the fourth EU coach to be recognized. It is the fifth time EU has won the award. The Fighting Scots won a playoff game for the first time under Cleary when they defeated No. 1 seed IUP, 79-63, in a quarterfinal. EU advanced to the semis for the first time since 2008 and will play East Stroudsburg Saturday, March 3 at 3:30 PM. Cleary led three Fighting Scots to all-conference recognition this season, including two first-team athletes. EU defied the odds after being picked eighth in the preseason poll and sit at 18-10 on the year.
ESU’s Jeff Wilson claimed the PSAC East Coach of the Year for the third time in his career and first since 2013. Wilson’s squad earned the right to host the Final Four following an 85-71 win against Kutztown in a quarterfinal bout. Under his direction this season, the Warriors produced a pair of all-conference players, including first-team representative Steve Harris. ESU’s offense is a 40-minute firework show while it sits fourth in the DII in scoring at 93.5 points per game. The Warriors shoot the ball effectively while knocking down 48.9% of their shots; which is second best in the PSAC. ESU paces the league in turnover margin (+7.41) and has scored at least 100 points on 10 occasions.
Gannon senior Damon Miraud won the PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Year merit and is the third Golden Knight to accomplish the feat. It marks the second consecutive season GU has had a major award winner. The senior is seventh in steals (49) while his team advanced the Final Four following a 77-70 win against Slippery Rock. Miraud sits 10th in total rebounds (215) and averages 7.4 per game. He has scored 10 or more points on 14 occasions this year.
West Chester’s Frank Rokins received the PSAC East Defensive Athlete of the Year accolade and first since 2016 (Matt Wiseley). WCU earned the No. 2 seed in the East and currently sits at No. 24 in the country. The junior scored a season-high 24 points in a win against KU Dec. 30. Rokins produced five games with at least two blocks, including three on two separate occasions. He notched double-digit rebounds seven times while recording a steal in 18 games.
Pitt-Johnstown’s Drew Magestro claimed the PSAC West Freshman of the Year accolade after being named Freshman of the Week three times. He is the first Mountain Cat to receive the award and only the second UPJ athlete to garner a major award. The freshman was clutch while draining a three-point shot with six seconds on the clock in a 65-63 win against IUP Feb. 8. Magestro notched a career-high 20 points at Bloomsburg Nov. 18 while dishing out a season-best eight assists against WCU on Jan. 24. He scored in double figures on 10 occasions and finished second on the squad with 38 three pointers.
KU’s Moe Williams swiped the PSAC East Freshman of the Year and is the sixth Golden Bear to claim the honor and first since 2008 (Ryan Washington). This marks the fourth consecutive year that KU has had a major award winner. Williams was tabbed Freshman of the Week five times while he averaged 10.7 points and 8.7 rebounds per contest. He ranks sixth in the league in rebounds and 10th in blocks (1.0). Williams produced eight double-doubles on the year, including six in a row, the most by a KU athlete in 20 years.
EU’s Jaymon Mason joins Sleva as a three-time all-conference first-team member. Mason broke EU’s all-time scoring record that was held by his father. Mason is one point shy of 2000 for his career.
KU’s Anthony Lee and BU’s Christian Mortellite appear on an all-conference team for the third time in their respective careers.
