Kurt Angle was just the third recipient of the PSAC Award of Merit, garnering the award in 1997, which came on the heels of him winning an Olympic gold medal at the 1996 Atlanta Games. Since receiving the award, Angle has gone on to enjoy a long career in various professional wrestling circuits, among them WWE and TNA, which is what he is perhaps best known for today.

Angle, a native of Pittsburgh, Pa. and a graduate of Mount Lebanon High School, was a three-time PSAC Wrestler of the Year from 1990-92. He won three PSAC titles, four Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) championships and two NCAA Division I championships at the heavyweight division in 1990 and 1992. He compiled a 116-10-2 collegiate record while wrestling for the Golden Eagles. Following his collegiate career, he went on to win two U.S. National Championships in 1995 and 1996 and the 1995 World Championship title. His amateur career was capped by winning the gold medal in freestyle wrestling at 220 pounds in Atlanta. After winning in the gold medal mach, Angle provided one of the most memorable moments of the 1996 Olympics when he dropped down to his knees to say a thankful and teary-eyed prayer.

Angle is just one of four wrestlers in American history to ever win a Junior World Championship, an NCAA Championship, a World Championship and an Olympic gold medal - accomplishing all four by age 26.
