Jan Hutchinson became the sixth recipient of the PSAC Award of Merit when she was presented with the award on April 14, 2012. She was the second individual associated with Bloomsburg to be awarded the honor, joining former NBA coach Chuck Daly, and is the first East Stroudsburg graduate to garner the PSAC's highest honor.

A 1971 (bachelors) and 1979 (masters) graduate of East Stroudsburg University, Hutchinson spent 33 years at Bloomsburg as the head coach of the softball team, and 32 years as the field hockey head coach, guiding both squads to near unparalleled success before retiring following the 2010 softball season. As the field hockey coach, she guided her teams to a record of 591-75-20. She is the winningest coach in NCAA history in all divisions and as of her retirement, the only one with at least 500 wins. Her teams won 16 national championships and also finished as the national runner-up nine times, and also won 17 PSAC championships while finishing as the conference runner-up eight times. Overall, Bloomsburg posted winning marks in 31 of her 32 seasons as field hockey head coach. As the softball coach, Hutchinson posted a career record of 1,215-288-2. She retired having the most wins in Division II softball history and with the sixth-most in all NCAA divisions. Hutchinson's 1982 team won the AIAW national championship and her teams advanced to the NCAA championship round 10 times and twice finished as the national runner-up. She also guided her teams to 15 PSAC championships.

Hutchinson was a 2006 recipient of the C. Vivian Stringer Award from the U.S. Sports Academy,
