California, Pa. - Much like the first meeting between West Chester and California (Pa.) back in week one this year, Saturday's PSAC championship game was an offensive shootout and once again, just like in the season-opener, it was Cal that had just a little bit more firepower as the Western Division champion Vulcans topped the champions of the Eastern Division, the Golden Rams 47-36 to claim the 2008 PSAC Championship in the first PSAC championship game since 1987.
The 83 points combined between the two teams marked the highest scoring championship game ever, surpassing the 75 points scored by West Chester and Clarion in a 41-34 West Chester win back in the 1969 championship game.
Cal quarterback Kevin McCabe threw for 443 yards and four touchdowns, completing 25-of-34 passes to lead the Vulcans. Receiver Marcel Pestano caught 11 of those passes and three of the touchdowns with 170 receiving yards. Fellow receiver A.J. Jackson caught just six passes but for 193 yards and also caught the other passing touchdown for the Vulcans.
West Chester quarterback Joe Wright did not have a bad day either as he threw for 345 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Mike Washington became the first-ever receiver in NCAA Division II and just the third in college football history encompassing all levels to have 1,000 receiving yards in four straight seasons as he caught seven passes for 117 yards and a touchdown. Dan DePalma returned a punt for a touchdown in the first half and also had an interception.
McCabe was named the MVP of the game. His 443 passing yards were a career high.
