Edinboro, Pa. - The Shippensburg women’s cross country team defended its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championship on a soggy Doug Watts Cross Country Course on Saturday morning. The Lady Raiders finished with 77 points to out-distance Bloomsburg, which finished with 95 points, and win the 30th Annual PSAC Women’s Cross Country Championships. It represented Shippensburg’s fourth overall PSAC crown. A total of 16 teams competed.
Shippensburg’s Neely Spence finished as the individual winner, as the sophomore picked up her second PSAC crown. The daughter of Shippensburg head coach Steve Spence, she dominated the field, covering the 6K course in a time of 21:32.4, winning by ten seconds over Priscilla Jennings of Millersville (21:42.3). Heavy overnight rains had left Edinboro’s course extremely wet in spots, but that didn’t seem to bother Spence.
Shippensburg finished with four All-PSAC performers, including Mary Dell, who came in third with a time of 21:54.7. Abby Huber (17th – 23:44.6) and Katie Frey (18th – 23:45.5) rounded out the All-PSAC contingent.
Bloomsburg’s lead runner placed ninth, but the Huskies had four runners earn All-PSAC accolades. Angela Borealo came in ninth (23:12.0) and Andrea Kellock was tenth (23:23.0).
Slippery Rock finished third as Jennifer Harpp placed fourth individually with a time of 22:14.2. The Rock had 106 points. Lock Haven was fourth with 134 points, and Kutztown came in fifth with 147 points despite not having one runner finish in the top twenty.
Edinboro’s Tina Yi rounded out the top five individuals with a time of 22:16.8.
