Bernardini, Francique claim top freshman awards; Townsley, Alvine named Coaches of the Year

2009 All-PSAC Women's Soccer Teams (pdf)

Lock Haven, Pa. -
Bloomsburg’s Kelly Modes and California’s Amanda Heister, a pair of four-time All-PSAC selections and this year’s PSAC Athletes of the Year, highlight the 2009 All-PSAC women’s soccer teams. Modes, the PSAC East Athlete of the Year, headlines the All-PSAC East first team as one of just two four-time first team All-PSAC selections on this season’s all-conference teams, while Heister, the PSAC West Athlete of the Year, makes her first career appearance on the first team after being a three-time second team selection previously in her career.

West Chester claimed the other two awards in the PSAC East as freshman goalkeeper Lyndsie Bernardini has been named the PSAC East Freshman of the Year while West Chester head coach Betty Ann Kempf Townsley. California claimed the Coach of the Year in the Western Division as Al Alvine was named the PSAC West Coach of the Year. For the second straight year, the PSAC West Freshman of the Year came from Gannon as forward Tenyka Francique received the award after teammate Amanda Sharbaugh was last year’s recipient.

The PSAC East and tournament champion West Chester Golden Rams led the way in the East and overall with seven all-conference selections, including six first team picks. Headlining that group was forward Sarah Oswald, the PSAC’s second-leading point scorer with 36 points and 1.71 points per game, third in the league. Her 16 assists  lead the PSAC and are seven more than the two players with the next most assists and she also leads the league in game-winning goals, as eight of her 10 goals have been game-winners. Oswald, who is now a three-time first team All-PSAC East selection, is joined on the first team by fellow Rams in midfielders Jess Bennett and Sam Paolino, defenders Tara Malkiewicz and Cindi Nickels and Bernardini at goalkeeper. Forward Jen Hutchinson was named to the second team from the Rams.

PSAC West champion California as well as IUP each led the way in the Western Division with five all-conference selections each, while IUP led the way with four first team honorees. Cal was led by Heister on the first team as a forward and she was joined by teammate Sam Regney in the midfield on the first team. Midfielder Carley Work and defender Kayla Klimasko as well as goalkeeper Paula Jackson were named to the second team. IUP was led on the first team by forward Sarah Romasco, who is now a four-time All-PSAC West selection. She was joined on the first team by teammates midfielder Allison Keller, back Laura Mizik, who was a second team selection the last two years, and goalkeeper Kelly Brennan. Forward Heather Robbins was named to the second team for the second straight year.

Other highlights on the all-conference teams included Shippensburg’s Gayle Kuntzmann, who earned her fourth overall All-PSAC East selection at forward and her third first team honor. Kutztown’s Chelsea Deeter, a junior, was named to the first team for the third straight year while teammate Chelsea Bressler, last year’s East Freshman of the Year, was named to the first team for the second straight year. Shippensburg’s Brittany Oncay, Millersville’s Olivia Taylor and Bloomsburg’s Kristine Preski each earned their third career all-conference citation after being named to the second team. In the West, Gannon’s Amanda Sharbaugh, last year’s Freshman of the Year, was named to the first team for the second straight year. Overall, there were 25 all-conference selections this year that were previous All-PSAC picks, while there were 27 first time honorees, including eight freshmen, but just two of those freshmen were first team honorees: Bernardini and East Stroudsburg defender Carly Collins.

Modes is Bloomsburg’s first PSAC Athlete of the Year since Alea Balthaser in 2000. She led Bloomsburg this year with seven goals, three assists and 17 points, helping lead the Huskies into the PSAC Tournament for the fourth straight season. The Huskies, which were picked as a co-favorite in the PSAC East in the preseason poll, were responsible for PSAC champion West Chester’s only loss of the season back on September 2, and Modes assisted on the lone goal of that game in the 1-0 win for the Huskies.

Bernardini is West Chester’s second Freshman/Rookie of the Year in the last three years, as teammate Sarah Oswald was named the East Rookie of the Year in 2007 and she is also the third Freshman of the Year in the last five years, as last year’s East Player of the Year, Lauren Boyer, was the Rookie of the Year in 2005. Bernardini stepped in to the starting goalkeeper spot this year, taking over for a departed veteran, and only allowed four goals this season in nearly 1900 minutes of play for a microscopic 0.19 goals against average. She recorded 15 shutouts and also posted an impressive .933 save percentage, making 56 saves in her 21 games played as the Golden Rams outscored opponents 54-4.

Heister helped lead California to their first-ever PSAC West title and a spot in the PSAC Tournament semifinals, as well as their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance. She is also Cal’s first-ever PSAC West Athlete of the Year, as entering the NCAA Tournament this weekend, she leads the PSAC in points (38), points per game (1.81), goals (17) and goals per game (0.81), and is second in game-winning goals with six.

Francique became the second straight Gannon player to earn the West Freshman of the Year by not only leading Gannon in scoring with 12 and points with 28, but also ranking fourth in goals and fifth in points in the PSAC. Her efforts helped lead Gannon into the PSAC Tournament for the second straight year but also to their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

Both Coaches of the Year are first time honorees after leading their respective teams to divisional titles and to the NCAA Tournament. For Townsley, she guided the Golden Rams to a 19-1-1 record and their third PSAC championship in the last four seasons. The Rams also claimed their fifth straight PSAC East title. Alvine, who had guided the Vulcans to 28 wins in the last two seasons, not only guided them to their first PSAC West title and NCAA appearance, but also their first PSAC Tournament appearance and a school record 16 wins en route to a 16-5-1 overall record heading into the NCAA Tournament.
