PSAC Football Athletes of the Week - Week 9 (Oct. 24)

Bookmark and Share

Erik Anderwkavich of C.W. Post became just the second player in the 77 years of organized PSAC football to account for over 600 yards of total offense in a single game, and the second in the last two years, and despite his team coming up just short in a loss to Kutztown, he is the PSAC East Offensive Player of the Week. East Stroudsburg linebacker Matt Freed is the East Defensive Player of the Week for the fifth time in his career and first this season after a standout performance that helped the Warriors snap a six-game losing streak with a win over Millersville.

Mercyhurst swept the awards in the West after knocking off California and snapping the Vulcans' 24-game PSAC West winning streak. Quarterback Travis Rearick is the Offensive Player of the Week after over 300 yards of total offense and four touchdown passes while cornerback Julius McCormick is the Defensive Player of the Week after making a couple of big plays that helped shift the momentum in the game. Their efforts not only helped the Lakers send the Vulcans to their first divisional loss since 2006 but also gave them a share of first place in the PSAC West and with them holding the tiebreaker over the Vulcans, the Lakers are the only team in the West that controls their own destiny for the division title.

PSAC Players of the Week - Oct. 24
(Week 9)

PSAC East Offensive Player of the Week
Erik Anderwkavich, C.W. Post
QB, Sr.,   Queens, N.Y./Holy Cross

Anderwkavich set a new school and PSAC record by accounting for 651 yards of total offense by throwing for 566 yards and rushing for 85 as he did all he could to lead the Pioneers to a win in a tough two-point loss, 50-48 to Kutztown. With his record-setting performance, he is the first player this year to earn a PSAC Player of the Week award after a loss. The senior completed 38-of-55 passes (69.1 pct.) for a school record 566 yards and threw for five touchdowns. He breaks the old PSAC record for total offense of 647 held by Edinboro’s Trevor Harris, becoming only the second player in PSAC history to accumulate over 600 yards of total offense in a game. His 566 passing yards ranks third all-time in PSAC history. Three of his TD tosses came in the fourth quarter and he also converted a pass on a two-point conversion as he rallied the Pioneers back from a 20-point deficit to come within a missed field goal as time expired of handing Kutztown its first loss.

PSAC East Defensive Player of the Week
Matt Freed, East Stroudsburg
LB, Sr.,     Souderton, Pa./Souderton

Freed recorded 11 tackles (8 solo), made two sacks, forced a fumble and had an interception to help lead the Warriors to a 65-14 win over Millersville. With his 11 total stops, he moved into third place in East Stroudsburg history with 364 career tackles. He was involved in two of ESU’s four first-half takeaways that helped lead to a 51-7 halftime advantage as he had a sack and forced fumble on Millersville’s first series, which was recovered inside the 20 and would later lead to a touchdown. He also returned an interception 30 yards to the Marauder 4-yardline to set up another TD in the second quarter.

PSAC West Offensive Player of the Week
Travis Rearick, Mercyhurst
QB, Jr.,    Elton, Pa./Forest Hills

Rearick guided the Lakers to a 31-21 upset win over California, which ended the Vulcans’ 24-game divisional winning streak and handed then their first PSAC West loss since 2006. The junior threw for 299 yards and four touchdowns, completing 21-of-37 passes (56.8 pct.) without an interception and only being sacked once. He also ran for 21 yards, giving him 320 yards of total offense. Rearick hit on two of his four TD passes on consecutive offensive plays to turn a 7-0 Lakers deficit into a 14-7 lead. He hit Terrance Coon for an 80-yard strike, the fourth-longest in school history, and then a 42-yard strike to Trevor Kennedy. He later engineered the Lakers to 17 straight unanswered points in the second half, including TD passes from four and 20 yards against a defense that had not allowed a second half touchdown in the last six games. His four TD tosses marked the most by Laker QB since 2007.

PSAC West Defensive Player of the Week
Julius McCormick, Mercyhurst
CB, Sr.,     Columbus, Ohio/Dublin Scioto

McCormick played an integral role in Mercyhurst’s 31-21 upset win over California as he recorded three solo tackles, including one for a loss of four yards, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, an interception and a pass break up. His two takeaways came on back-to-back possessions in the second quarter, which helped swing the momentum of the game. With Cal leading 7-0, he broke up a pass and then two plays later, picked off Cal QB Josh Portis at the Lakers 30-yardline to stop a threatening drive. Then, after the Lakers had tied the game with an 80-yard TD pass, McCormick stripped the ball from a Cal WR on the Vulcans’ first play from scrimmage, giving the Lakers the ball back and they would then score on their first offensive play on a 42-yard TD pass that gave them a 14-7 lead.
