2009-10 All-PSAC Women's Tennis Teams (pdf)

Lock Haven, Pa. - Kutztown’s Rohini Das has been named the PSAC East Athlete of the Year for the second straight season while California freshman Jutta Bornefeld has been named the PSAC West Athlete of the Year as that duo highlights the 2009-10 All-PSAC Women’s Tennis teams. Both individuals were also named all-conference in both singles and doubles.

Kutztown swept both player awards in the PSAC East, as freshman Ridhima Borooah is the East Freshman of the Year. West Chester head coach Tina Tharp is the PSAC East Coach of the Year, earning the award for the first time in her career. The awards were spread out in the West as three different teams were represented. In addition to the Athlete of the Year Bornefeld, IUP’s Katie Eaton is the West Freshman of the Year while Slippery Rock head coach Matt Meredith is the West Coach of the Year.

Das headlines the All-PSAC East singles team that features five repeat selections from last year, including two four-time All-PSAC East singles selections in both Das and Bloomsburg’s Katie Hasyn. Bloomsburg’s Laura Sullivan is also an all-conference honoree in singles for the second straight year. The East Stroudsburg duo of Katie D’Ambrosia and Amanda Kaufman are also all-conference honorees for the second straight year. Kaufman was last year’s PSAC East Freshman of the Year. Rounding out the All-PSAC East singles team is the only first-time all-conference singles pick, West Chester’s Claire Afrassiabian.

The All-East doubles team features one repeat duo and four individuals that have previously been all-conference in doubles. East Stroudsburg’s team of D’Ambrosia and Jamie Ferrigno earn all-conference accolades for the third straight year. Kutztown’s Das is a all-conference doubles pick for the fourth consecutive year as well, the only player on the all-conference team this year that is a four-time All-PSAC selection in both doubles and singles. This year, Das teamed with the Freshman of the Year in Borooah to earn the all-conference nod at doubles. The Bloomsburg duo of Hasyn and Kristen Bonito round out the East doubles teams. For Hasyn, it is her third career all-conference recognition at doubles while for Bonito, it is her first all-conference honor in singles or doubles.

Only half of the All-PSAC West singles team are repeat selections and that trio only combines for five previous all-conference citations. Headlining that group is Slippery Rock senior Laura Handy, who ends her career as a four-time All-PSAC West selection. Other repeat selections are Kim Ezzo of Mercyhurst and California’s Alina Stanila, last year’s West Freshman of the Year. Bornefeld joins her teammate on the all-conference team while first-time honorees Sarah Lynch of Slippery Rock and Chloe Pike of IUP round out the singles team.

Three individuals made both the singles and doubles all-conference teams in the West. Bornefeld was joined by teammate Nina Kowalski, who garners her third consecutive all-conference honor at doubles. Handy gains her third career all-conference honor in doubles, this time teaming up with Dunja Drmac, who earns her first all-league honor. IUP’s freshman duo of Pike and Emilia Osborne rounds out the doubles squad.

Das earns the PSAC East Athlete of the Year award for the second straight season after another standout year. So far this year, she has compiled an overall singles record of 20-4, including having won her last nine straight matches, while playing solely No. 1 singles. She has also combined with a few doubles combinations to go 16-8 at doubles, primarily at No. 1 and playing with Borooah, with whom she is 14-8, all at No. 1 doubles. In PSAC East play, she was a perfect 5-0 in singles.

Borooah played at both No. 2 and No. 3 singles this year and also saw brief time at No. 4, compiling a combined singles record of 11-9 on the season. She also went a combined 15-8 at doubles, including 14-8 with Das at No. 1.

Tharp earns her first career East Coach of the Year honor after guiding West Chester to its first appearance in the PSAC Tournament since 2002, which was the last year the PSAC tennis tournament was conducted as an open event. She guided the Golden Rams to a third place finish in the PSAC East, where they advanced to the quarterfinals as the East’s third seed.

Bornefeld becomes the fifth straight California player to win PSAC West Athlete of the Year, following former Vulcans standouts Helena VanEysendeyk the last two years and Inga Chilingaryan the two years previous to that. Bornefeld burst onto the scene of PSAC tennis this year by compiling a 20-1 overall singles record while playing at five different flights this year before eventually ascending to the No. 1 position, where she went a perfect 5-0 in PSAC West play. She also compiled a 16-7 doubles record while combining with a total of six different doubles partners on the year. In PSAC West play, she was also a combined 5-0 with playing with two different partners in doubles.

Eaton earns the nod as the PSAC West Freshman of the Year, beating out a talented group of first-year collegians in the West. She played at No. 2 singles for the Crimson Hawks all year and went an impressive 19-2 in dual matches in that flight. She also combined to go 20-4 in doubles play in dual matches while playing with five different partners on the year.

Meredith earns his fifth career PSAC Coach of the Year honor, including his second in the last three years in the PSAC West. He was also the overall PSAC Coach of the Year in 2002 and 2003 before the move to divisional play and he has also been named the PSAC West Coach of the Year in 2006 and 2008. He helped guide Slippery Rock to a runner-up finish in the PSAC Tournament. Overall, The Rock went 19-5 in dual matches this year, including a 4-1 mark in PSAC West play.
