Shippensburg Men Capture Second PSAC Indoor Track & Field Title in Last Three Years

Edinboro, Pa. - The Shippensburg men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams won the PSAC Indoor Track and Field Championships on Sunday, February 27 at the Mike S. Zafirovski Sports and Recreation Dome on the campus of Edinboro University. The Red Raiders’ men’s team won their second title in three years by a 145.50-125 margin over defending champion Lock Haven. East Stroudsburg finished third with 102.50 points, Slippery Rock was fourth with 99 points and Kutztown rounded out the top five with 69 points. The Shippensburg women won their second straight title by a 158-108.50 margin over Slippery Rock. Indiana (Pa.) was third with 74 points, Kutztown was fourth with 68 points and East Stroudsburg finished fifth with 64 points.
East Stroudsburg’s Negus Graham, who won the 200-meter and 400-meter dashes and was a member of the winning 4x400-meter relay team, was named the track and overall men’s MVP. Slippery Rock’s Chris Warning, who won the men’s shot put and finished second in the weight throw, was the field MVP.
Shippensburg’s Neely Spence, who won two individual events (3,000-meter and one-mile run) and one relay (distance medley), was named the women’s overall MVP. Indiana (Pa.)’s Brianna Liebold won the long jump and triple jump en route to earning field MVP honors, while Cheyney’s Simone Carter, who won the 60-meter and 200-meter dashes, was the track MVP.
On the men’s side, Matt Gillette of Shippensburg set a PSAC record and earned an NCAA provisional mark with a winning time of 4:10.84. California (Pa.)’s Brice Myers defended his title in the 60-meter hurdles with an NCAA provisional time of 8.08. Graham won the 400-meter dash with an NCAA provisional time of 47.95. He also set a PSAC record in winning the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.83, which is also an NCAA automatic qualifying time.
Chris Church of Lock Haven won the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.90, just seven one-hundredths ahead of Slippery Rock’s D.J. Chisom. In the 800-meter run, Mike Saparito of East Stroudsburg outpaced Slippery Rock’s Kevin Jewel for first place with a time of 1:53.19. Four men’s competitors set PSAC records in the 3,000-meter run, led by Lock Haven’s Nathan Zondlo, who finished in 8:25.07. In the 4x400-meter relay, East Stroudsburg’s team of Keith Parker-Washington, Greg Palmer, Ian Melhorn and Graham finished first with a time of 3:17.99.
In the men’s field events, the Red Raiders’ Steve D’Arcy won the shot put with an NCAA provisional mark of 52-04, while Leander Toney of Indiana (Pa.) set a PSAC record and earned an NCAA automatic qualifying mark with a winning distance of 6-11 in the high jump. Chris Thomas of Shippensburg won the triple jump with a mark of 48-06.75, while Slippery Rock’s Brady Wert won the heptathlon with 4,922 points, just two off the PSAC record.
On the women’s side, Spence earned an NCAA provisional time by finishing first in the one-mile run with a finish of 4:57.82, less than a second in front of teammate Emily Dubs. In the 3,000-meter run, Spence set a PSAC record by winning in 9:27.79, more than 21 seconds in front of her nearest competitor. The Red Raiders’ Caitlin Stutz won the 60-meter hurdles by less than a second over Edinboro’s Tabitha Bemis and earned an NCAA provisional mark with a winning time of 8.88.
In the 400-meter dash, Shippensburg’s Erica Hess finished first with a PSAC record time of 56.33. Carter won the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.65, just ahead of California (Pa.)’s Monique Sims. She also won the 200-meter dash with a finish of 25.23. Shippensburg’s Amanda Raudabaugh won the 800-meter run with a PSAC record time of 2:12.80. West Chester’s team of Melanie Ruff, Melinda Wentz, Sam Smarkola and Nicole Smith won the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:57.03.
In the women’s field events, Liebold won her second title of the championships in the triple jump with a winning distance of 39-07.25, which was also an NCAA automatic qualifying time. East Stroudsburg’s Lynn Mayer defended her title in the high jump with a winning mark of 5-07.75, while Kutztown’s April Doyle won the shot put with a distance of 43-04.50.
