Slippery Rock, Pa. – With a total of 174 points the Shippensburg University men’s track and field team won its 19th Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference outdoor championship Saturday at the Bill Lennox Track Complex in Slippery Rock, Pa. Shippensburg has now won three straight PSAC outdoor titles.
East Stroudsburg came in second behind Shippensburg with 111 points. Lock Haven had 103 points and placed third while Slippery Rock (96 points) and Kutztown (81.5 points) rounded out the top five.
Negus Graham of East Stroudsburg was named the overall MVP and the Most Valuable Track Athlete. Slippery Rock’s Chris Warning earned Most Valuable Field Athlete honors.
Graham pulled away in the 400-meter dash in 47.16 for the win while a pair of Lock Haven runners, Steve Roberts and Chris Jones, placed second and third with respective times of 47.91 and 48.15.
Graham also won the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.99. West Chester’s Leighon Johnson placed second at 22.09 while Graham’s teammate Keith Parker-Washington finished in third place at 22.23.
Warning of Slippery Rock won his third throwing event of the weekend when he came in first in the discus throw after a toss of 50.91 meters. Kutztown’s Mike Cheshire (48.06 meters) and Shippensburg’s Travis Nye (47.33 meters) placed second and third.
Shippensburg’s 4x100-meter relay team clocked a time of 40.90 to win the event. East Stroudsburg came in second at 41.04 and Millersville placed third with a time of 42.16.
Matt Gillette also brought Shippensburg a PSAC title in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 3:55.45. Teammate Stephen Schelander came in second place at 3:56.02 and Edinboro’s Scott Anderson came in third with a time of 3:56.37.
California’s Brice Miller won the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 14.25. West Chester’s Tyler Real came in second (14.69) and Slippery Rock’s Kris Stalma placed third (14.97).
East Stroudsburg’s Asher Ashfield clocked a time of 10.88 in the 100-meter dash to earn top honors. He was followed by Shippensburg’s Hiram Kirkland (10.92) and WCU’s Johnson (11.00).
In field action, Indiana’s Brandon Ford won the triple jump with a mark of 14.61 meters. Slippery Rock’s Terrece Draper came in second place with a jump of 14.45 meters; he was trailed by Kutztown’s Tyler Brooks in third place at 14.32 meters.
In the pole vault, Justin Germani of Kutztown posted a clearance of 4.86 meters to earn the win. Slippery Rock’s Cameron Daugherty placed second after clearing 4.71 meters while East Stroudsburg’s James Homola came in third with a mark of 4.56 meters.
Slippery Rock’s Kevin Jewel successfully defended his PSAC title in the 800-meters with a time of 1:51.29. Second place belonged to California’s Alex Smith (1:52.37) with Tom Troxell of Shippensburg coming in third place at 1:52.83.
Kutztown’s Kori Meshaw won the 400-meter hurdles by posting a time of 52.79. Close behind Meshaw was Keith Ogden of Millersville who ran a 52.81 race. Slippery Rock’s Ethan Geisler came in third at 52.90.
Nick Hilton won Lock Haven’s first PSAC title of the day with a blazing time of 9:13.01 in the 3,000-meter steeple chase. The time was over seven seconds faster than Edinboro’s Jordan Roose (9:21.51), who came in second place. Jake Sitler of Shippensburg finished in third place at 9:24.93.
In the final field event of the competition, Leander Toney of Indiana won the high jump with a mark of 2.07 meters. Lock Haven’s Chris Ammann, who placed second in the decathlon, finished second at 2.02 meters and East Stroudsburg’s Kyle Soden placed third after a jump of 1.97 meters.
East Stroudsburg’s 4x400-meter relay team of Negus Graham, Ian Melhorn, Greg Pammer and Keith Parker-Washington won the final race of the 2011 PSAC Outdoor Championships by over a second with a time of 3:13.91. Slippery Rock came in second at 3:15.01 and Bloomsburg finished third at 3:16.82.
Many athletes who competed at this weekend’s PSAC Championships will be selected to participate in the NCAA Division II National Championships May 26-29 in Turlock, Calif.
