Shippensburg wins 2011 women's PSAC Championship

Slippery Rock, Pa. – With a total of 170 points, the Shippensburg University women’s track and field team won its second straight Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference outdoor championship Saturday at the Bill Lennox Track Complex in Slippery Rock, Pa.

Slippery Rock came in second behind Shippensburg with 163.5 points. Kutztown had 95.5 points and placed third while East Stroudsburg (73.5 points) and Indiana (Pa.) (70.5 points) rounded out the top five.

Shippensburg Neely Spence was selected as the overall MVP. Slippery Rock’s Amanda Seigworth was named the Most Valuable Track Athlete and Kutztown’s Ashley Pinter earned Most Valuable Field Athlete accolades.

Spence continued her success at the PSAC Championships with a win in the 1,500 meters for Shippensburg at a time of 4:32.98. Shippensburg also swept second and third place in the race thanks to Jaime McCollum (4:33.84) and Emily Dubs (4:34.25).

Spence capped off her day with a relatively easy win in the 3,000-meter run. Spence recorded a time of 10:00.43. Rosie Mascoli scored a second place finish for East Stroudsburg thanks to a time of 10:04.57. Shippensburg Katrina Spratford finished in third place at (10:07.15).

Pinter picked up her second PSAC title on the weekend with a win in the discus throw (40.76 meters). Danielle Lewis of East Stroudsburg came in second at 39.67 meters while Slippery Rock’s Jade Hambrick placed third with a mark of 39.58 meters.

A day after breaking the 400-meter hurdle record, Seigworth, of SRU, returned to win the PSAC title in the same event in a time of 1:01.12. Caitlin Steutz of Shippensburg came in second at 1:01.35 with Clarion’s Alexis Carter placing third in 1:01.37.

Slippery Rock’s 4x100-meter relay team of Seigworth, Allison Smith, Jayme Stanek and Rachel Knapp came away with the PSAC title with a time of 47.22. Indiana’s team came in second with a time of 47.47 followed by California in third place at 47.52.

The 100-meter hurdle championship belongs to Shippensburg’s Caitlin Stuetz who registered a time of 14.51. Slippery Rock runners earned second and third place points when Seigworth and Smith placed back-to-back with times of 14.55 and 14.61.

Shippensburg’s success continued in the 400-meter dash as Erica Hess registered a time of 55.39 to come in first place. East Stroudsburg’s Jasmine Johnson came in second at 56.60 while Kat Faller of Edinboro placed third 57.24.

Sprinter Simone Carter of Cheyney captured the 100-meter dash title with a time of 12.08. She was joined in the top-three by California’s Monique Sims (12.36) and Indiana’s Brianna Liebold (12.41). Liebold won the triple jump with a mark of 11.88 meters. Slippery Rock’s Kim Stitt came in second with a jump of 11.52 meters and Millersville’s Katherine Lennex came in third after jumping 11.32 meters.

Carter also took home the PSAC title in the 200-meter dash (24.95). ESU’s Johnson came in second (25.39) and Sims placed third at 25.40.

Slippery Rock earned first and third place in the 800-meter run as Kaela Snyder won the event with a time of 2:10.22 and Caitlin Hancox placed third at 2:14.61. Shippensburg’s Amanda Raudabaugh came in second at 2:13.21.

Slippery Rock captured the first two positions in the javelin throw with Lexi Arnold coming in first (40.85 meters) and Kim Goth placing second (40.19 meters). Shippensburg’s Brittany Harlacker came in third with a throw of 38.51 meters.

The 3,000-meter steeple chase belonged to Kutztown’s Christina Reimer (10:52.74). Following Reimer were Katie Filemyr of Bloomsburg (11:17.83) and Shippensburg’s Sarah Strayer (11:19.68).

The Slippery Rock team of Rachel Knapp, Snyder, Seigworth and Smith won the 4x400-meter relay race in a time of 3:48.04. Shippensburg finished right behind SRU in 3:48.64. California rounded out the top-three with a time of 3:51.17.

Many athletes who competed at this weekend’s PSAC Championships will be selected to participate in the NCAA Division II National Championships May 26-29 in Turlock, Calif.
