Slippery Rock, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University Athletes for Forgotten Angels group recently traveled to Haiti for a week to help with cleanup following the latest earthquake to devastate the country.

The Athletes for Forgotten Angels group at Slippery Rock was formed in 2008 to assist people throughout the world that have been struck by disaster through community service efforts, sports clinics and donations of supplies.

The group, making its second trip to Haiti, has also been to New Orleans to help with the cleanup following Hurricane Katrina, St. Lucia to help organize a youth sports clinic and educate local school officials and has performed multiple community service acts on Slippery Rock’s campus and in the community.

“We were very excited about this year’s trip,” said Noreen Herlihy, head coach of the SRU women’s soccer team and the adviser for the group. “We have a great group of student-athletes that came this year and we delivered a lot of supplies to an area that desperately needed them.”

The group took 16 large boxes of donations that included soccer balls, soccer shoes, jerseys, shorts, socks and other sports gear. More importantly, the group also took pencils, crayons and other school supplies.

The group left the Pittsburgh airport early morning on Wednesday, January 11 for Florida, where they stayed over night before departing the following day on a cargo plane chartered by Missionary Flights International for Haiti.

While in Haiti, the group was stationed in Cap Haitien and stayed at a modest shelter setup for various volunteer and missionary groups that come through the area.

The itinerary for the trip varied from day to day based on which areas and tasks required the most attention from the group. Between various service projects, the group also delivered school supplies and sports equipment to local children and put on free sports clinics throughout the week.

Herlihy and the group wrote a daily journal of their experiences, which can be accessed using the link above and here.

The Forgotten Angels group departed Haiti on Tuesday, January 17 and spent a night in Florida before returning to Slippery Rock on January 18.

A complete list of the Slippery Rock student-athletes and coaches that went on the trip is posted below. For more information about the SRU Athletes for Forgotten Angels group, or to read journals from past trips, visit the link at the top of this page or here.
