Slippery Rock, Pa. - Slippery Rock University will play host to the 2012 PSAC Men's and Women's Cross Country Championships this Saturday, October 20 at the institution's Cooper Lake Campground. The men's 8k race is scheduled to begin at 10:15 a.m., with the women's 6k race following at 11:15 a.m. An awards ceremony will be held at 12:00 p.m. following both races.

With Shippensburg's four-time PSAC individual champion and two-time NCAA Division II champion, Neely Spence, moving on with graduation, the PSAC title is up-for-grabs amongst the women runners. The 2011 runner-up, Katie Spratford of Shippensburg, is the top returner for the Red Raiders, who have earned the last four PSAC team crowns and were selected to take back the title this year in the preseason poll conducted in August.

Two-time PSAC Athlete of the Week and last season's fourth overall finisher in the championship race, Vicki Davis of Bloomsburg, has won all four races she has competed in this fall and will lead the Huskies, the last squad other than Shippensburg to win a conference championship.

On the most recent U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Atlantic Regional poll, Shippensburg holds the top spot while Edinboro is slated in second. Indiana (Pa.) was selected third and Bloomsburg holds the fourth spot.

Lock Haven's Alex Monroe returns to defend his PSAC individual title in the men's race, as he crossed the finish line first last season covering the 8k in 24:31.5 as a sophomore. Edinboro's Scott Anderson won the individual crown in 2010, the first Fighting Scot in 10 years to claim the honor. Anderson finished just six seconds behind Monroe in last year's championship race to take second place.

In the team competition, Edinboro was voted to repeat conference championship honors in the preseason poll, as the Fighting Scots will be looking for their 29th PSAC Championship this weekend. Just three of Edinboro's All-Conference runners return to the course. Anderson will run alongside Bryan Deibel, who finished seventh in last year's championships as a sophomore. Shippensburg earned four first-place votes in the preseason poll and return Matt Gillette, who finished fourth last fall.

The PSAC covers the top five slots in the USTFCCCA Atlantic Regional poll, with Edinboro taking first and Lock Haven claiming the second slot. East Stroudsburg and Shippensburg are slotted third and fourth respectively, with host Slippery Rock in the fifth spot.
