MALLORY MOORE

Mansfield - Nutrition Major

Beech Creek / Central Mountain HS

Moore recently finished her senior season as a guard/forward on the Mountaineers women's basketball team.  A two-time All-PSAC East Second Team selection, Moore ranked eighth in the league in scoring (16.0 ppg), seventh in rebounding (8.3 rpg) and fourth in steals (2.9 spg) during the 2010-11 campaign.  This year she elevated her play to lead the league in scoring (18.8 ppg) and rank second in steals (2.9 pg) while hitting a league-best 152 free throws at an 84.4% clip (5th).

Why did you choose Mansfield?

Because it was small enough for me. I did not want to be at a huge university where I would be “lost in the crowd."  I also chose Mansfield because I felt it would give me the best opportunity for a successful career in athletics.

What is the biggest adjustment you had to make going from high school to college?

How I used my time.  In high school I would come home watch some tv, eat, go to practice then come home do the little bit of homework I had to do and go to bed. However, when I got to college I had to learn how to appropriately manage my time so I could get everything done that I needed to throughout the day because the schedule that I practiced back in high school did not work.

What have you’ve enjoyed most about college?

Meeting new people, having a sense of freedom and being on my own.

What are your career plans?

Upon graduating college, I hope to go overseas to play professional basketball somewhere. After I am finished with that I plan to open my own fitness gym so that I can make differences in people’s lives.

What is the best advice you’ve ever been given?

The best advice I have ever been given was by my high school basketball coach who would ALWAYS say, “Never be satisfied”.  I never really took those words to heart until my senior year of high school when I realized exactly what he meant.  If you are never satisfied in what you do you will always push for something better and greater than what you thought was capable for yourself.
Among athletes in the family, where do you rate?

In my family there are not too many athletes. However, if I was to rate where I was amongst them I would have to say close to the top because I am a college athlete and have been pretty successful in my career.
What is your top collegiate athletics memory?

My top collegiate athletics memory thus far was when I scored my 1,000th point. It meant a lot to me because I did not get 1,000 points in high school and I made a goal for myself that I would get 1,000 in college. So I put in countless hours at the gym for it to happen.

... most memorable athletics accomplishment in your lifetime?

My senior year of high school when my team and I went 23-3. We won 23 games in a row which broke records at our school and had our town really behind us. It was special to me because all the people on my team had been together since we were little and we worked hard all the time. It was a very nice way to end our senior year.
What is your favorite pro sports team?

The Los Angeles Lakers.

Who is your favorite athlete and why?

My favorite athlete is Kobe Bryant.  I feel he has a "never-lose" attitude and he sees himself as one of the greats. The way he carries himself and acts, to me, makes him someone great to look up to as well.

What person has had the most significant influence on you from an athletics perspective?

That would have to be my lifetime basketball coach, Skip Confer. He actually asked me to play a game for him when I was in third grade and from that day on you couldn't get me away from the game. He always gave me insight on the game and really pushed me to be the person I have become.  He also battled with cancer and eventually lost his battle, however, he showed me how to always be strong and never ever quit no matter who tells you something is impossible.

If I could go pro in any sport it would be:

Basketball because I love the game soooo much!!
Do you have any pregame rituals or superstitions?

I don't have a pregame ritual I had to do.  However, I would try to keep my routine the same.  Whenever I would play bad I would switch up my routine and begin new until I played bad again.

I would be a lot more effective if I would spend less time:

WATCHING EVERY SINGLE BASKETBALL GAME that is available to me.

Who is your celebrity crush?

Trey Songz.

If I could change one thing about the sport I play, it would be:

For the college women to have a 10 second back court violation like the men. Which would mean to put 35 seconds on the shot clock versus 30.

What’s on your Ipod during pregame?

On the bus to the game nothing but R&B. When I get to the gym I switch to rap and hip hop. However, the very last thing I listen to before I put my ipod down is an opera-like song because is calms me down.

Stuck on a deserted island, what three things would you bring?

I would take my blankie that I can’t go anywhere without, my cell phone, so I could communicate with my family and friends, and my brother’s gun and ammo so I wouldn’t be attacked by any animals.

Fill in the blanks:

When you’re in my hometown, you should try the home cooked food at Furst Corner Restaurant.

Sport I would look bad doing, and why:

One sport is soccer because I never did well when I played in gym class.  I am not that talented with my feet.

The most addictive snack food for me is:

DORITOS. I eat them ALL the time. It doesn't matter what kind because I love them all.

My hidden talent is:

baton twirling.

Words your coach says that you swear you can hear in your sleep:

1) “see the numbers make the pass!”  ...  2) “on time and on target”  ...  3) “do the little things and the big things will come”

What is your favorite vacation spot?

When I am at school, it is my house.  I love just going home and hanging out with my family. However, when I am home and need to get away I will always choose the beach. I love laying in the sun and just relaxing on the beach.

My favorite movie I’m embarrassed to admit:

The Disney movie, Fox and the Hound.
