Shippensburg Women Win Third Straight PSAC Outdoor Track & Field Title

For the third consecutive year, the Raiders of Shippensburg University will take home the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Women's Outdoor Track and Field championship. The Raiders won with an overall score of 189 while East Stroudsburg finished second with 101.50 points. Slippery Rock took third with a final score of 93.50.
Saturday's events began by resuming Friday night's pole vault competition that was stopped due to lightning. Shippensburg's Megan Breski took home first place honors with an NCAA provisional jump of 3.72 meters. Angela Schroeder from Slippery Rock finished second with a score of 3.57 meters.
Of today's 15 finals, Shippensburg claimed first place finishes in six of the events. With the win, Shippensburg has now won seven outdoor championships in school history.
The javelin throw produced two provisional marks from the event's top two finishers. Slippery Rock's Alexandra Arnold won the event with a throw of 42.08 meters and Shippensburg's Ashley Merton took second with a throw of 40.64 meters.
Sarah Brotzman of Shippensburg won the discus throw with an NCAA provisional throw of 43.11 meters. Clarion's Allyson Cress finished second with a score of 38.18 while Lindsay Hepburn of Lock Haven came in third with a throw of 37.90 meters.
The top four finishers in the triple jump scored provisional marks. Tabitha Bemis from Edinboro came in first with a jump of 12.14 meters. Fallon Heddings came in second at 11.77 meters and Laurie Ajavon was third at 11.74. Millersville's Katherine Lennex was in fourth with a jump of 11.73 meters.
California would pull out a close victory in the 4x100-meter relay with a provisional time of 47.02. Shippensburg came in second and was just short of the provisional mark at 47.51 seconds. East Stroudsburg's team was also close to a provisional time at 47.54.
One of today's most exciting finishes came in the finals of the 100-meter hurdles. Shippensburg's Caitlin Stuetz won the event by a hundredth of a second, edging out Edinboro's Tabitha Bemis for the top spot. Stuetz won with a time of 14.08 while Bemis finished at 14.09; both times were provisional marks.
Indiana's Brooke McDaniel hit the 400-meter dash NCAA provisional mark with a time of 56.30, good enough for a first place finish. Nicole Smith from West Chester came in second at 57.17 seconds and Shakeria Love of California was third at 57.23.
The 100-meter dash produced the closest finish of all of today's events. California's Monique Sims and Danielle Smith of East Stroudsburg shared first place honors with a provisional time of 12.00 seconds. Bria Jay took third for California with a mark of 12.14.
All top three finishers in the 800-meter run produced NCAA provisional times but it would be Amanda Raudabaugh who would win the event with a time of 2:10.89. Kutztown's Maria Borland was second at 2:13.04 while Slippery Rock's Caitlin Hancox finished third at 2:13.52.
In the 400-meter hurdles, the top four runners posted provisional times. Caitlin Stuetz was first with a time of 1:00.11 while Clarion's Alexi Carter finished second at 1:01.10. Slippery Rock's Jayme Stanek was third at 1:02.43 and Indiana's Krista Matsko finished fourth with a time of 1:02.79.
Two freshmen claimed the top spots in the 200-meter dash. Danielle Smith of East Stroudsburg took home top honors with a provisional time of 24.60 seconds. Cheyney's Shanavia Thomas was second at 24.92. California' Monique Sims finished third at 25.02.
Corinne Fitzgerald from East Stroudsburg took home first place in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Her time of 10:50.72 is a provisional mark. Shippensburg's Sarah Stayer also produced a provisional time at 11:03.90, good enough for second place. Bloomsburg's Katie Filemyr (Willow Grove/Bishop McDevitt) rounded out the top three with a time of 11:14.25.
The top three runners in the 1,500-meter run posted NCAA provisional times. Shippensburg's Amanda Raudabaugh was first with a time of 4:32.47 while teammate Katrina Spratford came in second at 4:33.75. West Chester's Kathleen Casey came in third with a time of 4:34.67.
Elicia Anderson of Millersville won the 3,000-meter run with a time of 9:55.76. Shippensburg's Lara Crofford and Katrina Spratford battled it out for the second spot. Crofford would come in second at 9:59.07 while Spratford came in third at 9:59.56.
The day's final event was the 4x400-meter relay. California would win the event with a time of 3:50.28, missing the provisional time by just 0.28 seconds. Shippensburg came in second with a mark of 3:52.14 and West Chester would take third at 3:54.52.

Friday Women's Recap
East Stroudsburg leads the 2012 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships with 37 points after day two of competition. Shippensburg is in a close second with 35 points while Kutztown sits in third with 31 points. Six finals were completed today, including the hammer throw, high jump, shot put, long jump, 5,000-meter run, and the conclusion of the heptathlon.
With an NCAA provisional throw of 54.28 meters, Lock Haven's Vanita Moses took home a first place finish in the hammer throw. Shippensburg's Sarah Brotzman was a second place finisher with a provisional toss of 50.42 meters. Cassie Carrow of Slippery Rock finished third with a throw of 48.19 meters.
Another NCAA provisional mark was met in the high jump as Shippensburg's Erin Flick jumped 1.71 meters, good enough to win the event. East Stroudsburg's Christina O'Connor and Devyn Emerich were both 0.02 meters way from provisional scores as they both jumped 1.66 meters, tying for second place.
All top three throwers in the shot put posted provisional scores. Kutztown's April Doyle won the event with a throw of 14.08 meters. Indiana's Ayanna LeBlanc was second at 13.71 meters and Lock Haven's Vanita Moses took third at 13.40 meters.
Today's long jump produced two NCAA automatic qualifying scores. Tabitha Bemis from Edinboro jumped 6.13 meters to win the event and secure a spot at the national tournament. Meanwhile, Indiana's Laurie Ajavon posted a score of 6.03 meters, also punching her ticket to the NCAA Championships.
Millersville's Elicia Anderson was a first place finisher in the 5,000-meter run with a provisional mark of 16:53.90. Shippensburg's Lara Crofford was second at 17:41.05 while Mansfield's Jessica Scordino was third at 17:58.59.
After two days and seven events, Stephanie Smigiera of Edinboro took home first place honors in the heptathlon. Khyalyani Whitaker from California finished in second place while East Stroudsburg's Theresa Horn took third. Final scores were not distributed but will be posted when received.
All other track events held today were preliminary rounds with the finals being held on Saturday. The top qualifiers in each of today's events:

The 2012 PSAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships will conclude tomorrow, May 5th. The day will start at 10:00 a.m. with the conclusion of the pole vault.
*The pole vault was scheduled to be finished today but lightening in the area forced a stop to the action.

Thursday Women's Recap
East Stroudsburg leads the 2012 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships with 14 points after day one of competition. Today's events included the first four events of the women's heptathlon as well as the finals of the 10,000-meter run.
Stephanie Case of Slippery Rock took home first place honors in the 10,000-meter run as she pulled away in the later portions of the race to win by nearly 21 seconds with a time of 36:22.76. With the win she gave Slippery Rock 10 team points.
East Stroudsburg's Rosie Mascoli and Corinne Fitzgerald rounded out the top three of the 10,000-meter run. Mascoli was a second place finisher with a time of 36:43.42 while Fitzgerald was third at 37:03.38.
In the heptathlon, Khyalyani Whitaker of California (Pa.) sits in first place after day one's events with 2,636 points. Her highest scoring event of the day was the high jump as she jumped 1.61 meters for 747 points.
Lock Haven's Alyssa Wherry is six points off the lead in a close second with 2,630 points. Wherry's two strongest events of the day were in the 100-meter hurdles and the 200-meter dash.
Stephanie Smigiera from Edinboro closed out the heptathlon's top three with 2,559 points. Smigiera was a first place finisher in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.65, giving her 758 points in the single event.
Day two of the 2012 PSAC Outdoor Championships will begin tomorrow, May 4th as the women's heptathlon resumes at 10:30 a.m. The remaining events include the long jump, javelin, and 800-meter run. Along with several preliminary events and the heptathlon finals, tomorrow will also include the finals of the hammer throw, high jump, pole vault, shot put, long jump, and 5,000-meter run.

Bloomsburg University will be the site of the 2012 PSAC (Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference) Championships Thursday May 3 through Saturday May 5 at Robert B. Redman Stadium.
Action for the close to 700 entrants will get underway on Thursday at 11 am with the start of the men's decathlon, while the women's heptathlon will start at 11:30 a.m. At 8 p.m. in the evening the men's 10,000-meter final will be conducted with the women's 10,000 meter final starting at 8:45 p.m. Admission on Thursday is free for everyone.
On Friday at 10 a.m. the decathlon will finish with the women's heptathlon will start at 10:30 a.m. Field events will start at noon on Friday, while track events start at 1 p.m. Admission to the track events is $7 for adults and $2 for students/seniors with any student from a PSAC school getting free admission with valid ID.
Shippensburg is the PSAC defending champions in both the men's and women's action. The Raiders are seeking their fourth straight crown, while the Lady Raiders are trying to make it three straight.
In all four women will be returning to defend PSAC titles, while in the men's competition seven individuals will be vying to defend their PSAC titles.
For the women, Kelly Fischer from Slippery Rock is the returning champ in the pole vault, while April Doyle won last year's shot put. Alexandra Arnold of Slippery Rock is the reigning javelin champion, while Caitlin Stuetz of Shippensburg is the defending champion in the 100-meter hurdles.
On the men's side, Brice Myers from California, Pa. is the defending champ in the 110-meter hurdles and has run the top time in all of Division II this season to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA championships.
In addition Slippery Rock's Kevin Jewel is a returning champ in the 800 meters, while Kori Meshaw from Kutztown will try to defend his title in the 400-meter hurdles. In the triple jump IUP's Brandon Ford is a returning champ, while in the 1500 meter run Matt Gillette is the defending champion. The final PSAC champ that returns this year is Ben Hahn of Edinboro in the 5000 meter run.
