2013 All-PSAC Teams

Lock Haven, Pa. – Millersville’s Zach Stone and California’s Kyle Petty headline their respective PSAC baseball divisions as the Athletes of the Year. Brian Almand of Bloomsburg was named the Freshman of the Year for the East, while Gannon’s Aaron Cox was deemed the West’s Freshman of the Year. On the mound, Millersville’s Chris Murphy earned Pitcher of the Year of the Eastern Division and Shayne Herold of Gannon was tabbed the West’s Pitcher of the Year. To accompany his Athlete and Pitcher of the Year, Jon Shehan earned East Coach of the Year honors, and Mike Conte of California was named the West’s Coach of the Year.

Zach Stone, the first Marauder to notch a batting average over .400 during the regular season since 2002, ranks first in the conference in on base percentage, third in hitting, and fifth in slugging percentage. Recently, the first baseman surpassed Coach Shehan in career doubles with 42 in just three seasons while also chalking-up 119 RBI in his career. During his junior season, Stone posted the second-longest hitting streak in Millersville baseball history with a run of 17, while also reaching base safely in 18 consecutive games to kick-off the 2013 season.

Kyle Petty, a three-time All-Region selection, has played at nearly
every position for the Vulcans during his senior season, but spent most of the season behind the plate. Petty is leading the league with a .636 slugging percentage and 36 stolen bases. In conference play, Petty leads with a .449 batting average. Hitting .414, the right-hander is also dangerous on the mound, as he leads the Vulcans in saves with four.

Gannon’s right-hander Shayne Herold has been dominating on the mound, as he established a season ERA of 1.09. His PSAC-low ERA also translates to the conference’s lowest opposing team batting average with .181. He has allowed just seven earned runs in over 57 innings of work while wafting 53 batters. Herold has also earned nine wins during the season and has not experienced a loss during his senior campaign. Against conference foes, Herold has notched the league’s best .091 ERA.

In the East, Chris Murphy has been a commanding force on the hill
for the Marauders. The two-time NCBWA D-II Pitcher of the Week made history on two occasions this season, first with a no-hitter against Glenville State. Murphy followed it with the 18th perfect game in the Division II history on March 15 against Philadelphia. The East Pitcher of the Year needed just 64 pitches in the perfect game to leave his mark in the record books. In over 86 innings pitched this season, Murphy posted 25.1-consecutive scoreless innings, while also leading D-II in victories with 12.

Infielder Brian Almand of Bloomsburg made a name for himself in the PSAC as a rookie this season with a team-high batting average of .357 that ranks in the top 15 in the league. Almand amassed 60 hits, including 12 doubles and two round-trippers, while driving in a Bloomsburg-high 39 runs and scoring on as many occasions.

The West’s Freshman of the Year, Aaron Cox of Gannon collected 33 hits and scored 25 runs during his rookie season. Cox, a pitcher and infielder committed just three errors in 141 chances for a .979 fielding percentage.  On the mound, Cox finished the regular season with an ERA of 2.43 while striking out a team-high 75 hitters and allowing fewer than 50 hits in 63 innings of work.

Shehan has earned the East Coach of the Year nod for the second time in his career, with the first coming in 2008. At the helm of the program, he has now led the Marauders to their fourth postseason appearance in the last six seasons, as the 2013 championship marks the club’s third-consecutive trip to the conference tournament for the first time in school history.

Conte has now been named the West’s Coach of the Year for the seventh time in his 19-year career as the head coach of the Vulcans. He has led the program to its fifth-straight PSAC Championship appearance and its 13th overall. Conte also earned the honors in 2010, 2007, 2006, 2004, 2001, and 1997, with conference championships coming in 2010 and 2004.

The East features six first team repeats including first-team selections Matt Albaugh of Kutztown and Dan Johnson of Millersville. The West has eight first team repeats from previous seasons, including Stephen Cooke from IUP who is making his third appearance on the first team. Petty, Robbie Zinsmeister of IUP and Ben Rawding of Mercyhurst are 2013 first team honorees for the second time in their collegiate careers.
