Tom Housenick of the Allentown Morning Call has been chosen as the winner of the 2013 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference George Heaslip Media Award. Housenick received his award Monday among peers and colleagues at the PSAC East Football Media Luncheon hosted by Kutztown University.

Housenick has covered the PSAC, its member institutions and student-athletes for four newspapers over the last 25 years, most recently for the Morning Call, where he is a senior writer. He joined the staff in 2009 and covers East Stroudsburg University and Kutztown University on the college basketball beat, along with local student-athletes across multiple sports.

Housenick began his career in Wilkes-Barre in 1988, starting with the Citizens Voice and later working for the Times Leader. He moved to the Sunbury Daily Item in 2000, where he covered Bloomsburg University football and basketball.

He has received numerous awards for his writing throughout his career, including recognition for college basketball and high school football. He also has a strong online presence, contributing to the Varsity blog on the Morning Call’s website, and providing frequent updates on Twitter @TomHousenick.

His wife, Mandy, is a sports writer at the Morning Call and his son, Jordan, is a Communications major at Bloomsburg.

Housenick becomes the 25th winner of the Heaslip Award which is chosen annually by the league’s sports information directors. Named in honor of the late Cheyney University Sports Information Director George Heaslip, the award recognizes a media professional for his or her meritorious service while covering the conference's student-athletes, coaches and teams.
