Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference football will be featured in one of the United States’ largest sports venues this Saturday as Slippery Rock plays host to Mercyhurst at Michigan Stadium. Kickoff in the 109,901-seat stadium is scheduled for 1 p.m.
The game, being touted as the Big House Battle, marks the third time Slippery Rock will play in Ann Arbor. The relationship between the two schools materialized in the latter half of the 20th century when former University of Michigan announcer Steve Filipiak would share Slippery Rock football scores over the public address system. Since that time Michigan fans have maintained a special affection for The Rock football program, including a strong showing for Slippery Rock’s initial trip to the Big House in 1979. In conjunction with the University’s Band Day 35 years ago, local fans helped Slippery Rock and Shippensburg set the NCAA Division II Football attendance record of 61,143, a mark that remains intact, today. The contest is a match up of two of the league's top teams over the last four years. Each has won one outright and one shared Western Division crown during that span. Slippery Rock is the defending PSAC West champions having lost a hard-fought battle to Bloomsburg in last year's title game. Mercyhurst won the PSAC Championship title in 2010 - it's lone appearance in the title game.
