Bethel Park, Pa. / Bethel Sean Edgar of Clarion completed the weekend by winning the Mystic Rock Challenge, hosted by California. The sophomore shot 71 and 76 in the first and second rounds, respectively, before firing a third round total of two-over 74. Edgar totaled a score of 221 (+5) for the three rounds to take first place in the tournament, and ended with a four stroke lead over the field. Schedule/Results Women's Golfer of the Week Hope Giordano Kutztown (Jr.) Southampton, Pa. / Council Rock South Kutztown’s Hope Giordano won the annual Kutztown Fall Invitational by one stroke this weekend, finishing with a score of 11-over. The junior won her first tournament as a Golden Bear after shooting a tournament-best 79 in the opening round. She then shot an 80 on Sunday to seal the win by five strokes. Giordano led the field with 21 pars and three birdies. Kutztown won the tournament with a team total score of 666 (+74). Schedule/Results Women's Volleyball Eastern Division Athlete of the Week Cambria Wierman Pitt-Johnstown (Fr. / OH) Hanover, Pa. / Delone Catholic Cambria Wierman of Pitt-Johnstown led the Mountain Cats to a 2-1 week which included a 3-1 win over first place Lock Haven to take sole posession of second place in the East. The freshman outside hitter totaled 36 kills at a .248 clip in UPJ's 11 sets. Wierman registered 34 digs for the week, and her mark of 18 digs against Lock Haven set a new career-high. She also notched her first double-double of the season with 17 kills and 11 digs against West Chester. Additionally, Wierman tallied nine service aces for the Lady Cats this week. Women's Volleyball Western Division Athlete of the Week Laura Subject Clarion (Sr. / S) Novi, Mich. / Novi Laura Subject of Clarion was key to the Golden Eagles going 3-0 in PSAC West play last week, including a 3-2 win over Gannon that put Clarion in sole possession of first place in the west. The senior setter was above her season averages in three categories averaging 11.18 set assists, 3.45 digs, and 0.73 kills. Subject totaled 123 assists on the week, including 56 in the 3-2 victory over Gannon, as well as 37 and 30 against IUP and Mercyhurst, respectively. Subject added 38 digs in Clarion’s 11 sets, grabbing a season-high 22 against Gannon. Subject is currently second in the PSAC with 10.91 assists per set. Standings | Statistical Leaders | Schedule/Results Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Week Aaron Dinzeo Calfornia (Sr.) Sidney, Ohio / Sidney California's Aaron Dinzeo placed second out of 357 runners while competing in the Gold Race of the Paul Short Run at Lehigh University on Saturday. He crossed the finish line with a time of 23:35, and finished seven seconds behind the overall winner, who placed third at last year's NCAA D-II Championships. The field's 357 competitors featured the defending individual NCAA Division II national champion, as well as runners from over a dozen Division I programs. Schedule/Results Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Week Julie Friend California (So.) Markleysburg, Pa. / Uniontown Julie Friend of California claimed her third individual title of the fall and helped the Vulcans finish third in the team standings of the White Race of the Paul Short Run at Lehigh University on Saturday. Friend won the race by 12 seconds after crossing the finish line in 21:27. The sophomore was one of only three individuals in a field over 309 runners to record a sub-6:00 mile pace, averaging 5:45. Schedule/Results Field Hockey Athlete of the Week Rachal Toppi West Chester (Fr. / F) Glassboro, N.J. / Glassboro No. 3 West Chester's Rachal Toppi scored five goals in two games last week for the Golden Rams, including a hat trick in the first half against No. 7 East Stroudsburg. The freshman recorded her first goal just 4:24 into the contest, following by another mark in the 16th minute and secured a 3-0 halftime lead with another strike in the 34th minute. Against Ursinus in the annual Snell Cup, with the Golden Rams trailing by two, Toppi turned-in back-to-back goals in the 51st and 55th minutes to tie the contest at three apiece. Standings | Statistical Leaders | Schedule/Results Men's Soccer Athlete of the Week Robbie Bennett Gannon (Sr. / F) Durban, South Africa / St. Benedict School Robbie Bennett led Gannon to a 2-0 weekend road trip to Millersville and Shippensburg. The senior forward scored game-winning goals during both contests. On the weekend, Bennett recorded three goals and one assist for seven points. After trailing Millersville 2-1 in the second half, Bennett scored in 95th minute to give the Golden Knights a 3-2 overtime victory. Bennett's game winner against Shippensburg came in the 80th minute. Currently, the South Africa-native leads the PSAC in shots (41, 4.56/game), is second in goals (six), and fourth in game-winning goals (two). Standings | Statistical Leaders | Schedule/Results Women's Soccer Athlete of the Week Diana Malanga Kutztown (Jr. / M) Lavallette, N.J. / St. Rose Diana Malanga played a crucial role in Kutztown's two PSAC wins this week. The junior captain netted her first career hat trick in Kutztown's 3-2 win against Bloomsburg. She struck first in the seventh minute, followed by another mark in the 15th minute, with her final strike coming in the 18th minute to cement a 3-0 halftime lead for the Golden Bears. Against Lock Haven, Malanga scored her fifth goal in three games in part of a 3-0 rout over the Lady Eagles, and also tallied an assist. Standings | Statistical Leaders | Schedule/Results Football: Eastern Division Offensive Athlete of the Week Matt Soltes East Stroudsburg (Jr. /QB) Vernon, N.J. / Vernon East Stroudsburg's Matt Soltes captained an offense that defeated Shippensburg 37-33, marking the program's first win over the Red Raiders since 2008. Soltes finished the day with 527 yards of total offense, including 416 passing yards and four touchdown passes. Soltes added 111 yards on 13 carries and went 33-of-54 through the air. The game marked his second career game with 400+ passing yards and 100+ rushing yards. Football: Eastern Division Defensive Athlete of the Week Bryan Thomson East Stroudsburg (Sr. / DL) Keyport, N.J. / Keyport East Stroudsburg's Bryan Thomson recorded eight tackles, two tackles for loss, a sack, a fumble recovery and two blocked kicks in a 37-33 win at Shippensburg. Thomson played a critical role in ESU's first win over SHIP since 2008, as he blocked a 30-yard field goal attempt in the first quarter and a PAT in the fourth. His fumble recovery came on Shippensburg's final offensive play after Shippensburg drove to just outside the red zone with less than a minute to play. Football: Western Division Offensive Athlete of the Week Shamar Greene Slippery Rock (So. / RB) Duquesne, Pa. / West Mifflin Slippery Rock's Shamar Greene put-up 123 yards of offense against the PSAC's leading defense, as The Rock earned a 31-28 victory over Gannon. The Golden Knights' defense entered the weekend leading the PSAC in total, scoring, and rushing defense, and Slippery Rock posted 161 yards on the ground led by Greene's 85 yards. Greene earned the winning touchdown at the 6:05 mark in the third quarter. He also recorded four receptions for 38 yards to help The Rock preserve their undefeated record. Football: Western Division Defensive Athlete of the Week Garrett Wild Mercyhurst (Sr. / LB) Pittsburgh, Pa. / Baldwin Mercyhurst's Garrett Wild led a Laker defense that held Clarion to 191 yards of total offense and zero points in Mercyhurst's first win of the season. Wild finished with five tackles, including four solo stops, two tackles for a loss of seven yards, and blocked a punt that led to Mercyhurst's final score of the game in the third quarter.
