West Chester Bows Out of NCAA Tournament
 
West Chester, Pa. – West Chester fell 2-0 to visiting Saint Rose in the 2014 NCAA Division II Women’s Soccer Quarterfinals on Sunday afternoon at Rockwell Field.
 
Roxana Hernandez of Saint Rose netted the game-winner in the 49th minute and teammate Carmelina Puopolo scored an insurance mark in the 82nd minute. Puopolo now has 21 goals on the season.
 
The Golden Rams were outshot 20-3 and put just one shot on goal. West Chester keeper Alex Srolis totaled seven saves in the contest.
 
The Golden Rams are now 13-10-5 all-time in the NCAA Tournament and have won the Atlantic Regional championship six times (2005, 2006, 2007, 2010, 2012, and 2014). West Chester has advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinal round three times in the last five years.

NCAA ATLANTIC REGIONAL FINAL

West Chester Claims Atlantic Regional Title

West Chester, Pa. – West Chester claimed the 2014 NCAA Division II Women’s Soccer Atlantic Regional title with a 1-0 victory over West Virginia Wesleyan on Friday afternoon at Rockwell Field.
 
West Chester will host the East Regional victor in the NCAA Quarterfinals on Sunday, November 23 at noon. The Golden Rams are set to face the winner of Saint Rose and Mercy.
 
Scarlett Walsh, assisted by Kara Parvel, netted the game-winner at the 4:57 mark to give her two goals on the season.
 
Alex Srolis got the start between the pipes for the Golden Rams and made one save in 57 minutes. Madi Mitchell played the remainder of the contest and also tallied on save in three shots face.
 
West Chester put five shots on target, while the Bobcats had just two shots on goal.
 
The Golden Rams are now 13-9-5 all-time in the NCAA Tournament and have won the Atlantic Regional championship six times (2005, 2006, 2007, 2010, 2012, and 2014). West Chester has advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinal round three times in the last five years.

NCAA SECOND ROUND RECAPS

West Chester Downs California on PKs

 
West Chester, Pa. – No. 2 West Chester defeated No. 6 California 4-2 on penalty kicks after battling to a 2-2 double-overtime tie in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday afternoon.
 
The Vulcans struck first when junior Janelle McCann scored her team-leading 14th goal of the season in the 29th minute. The Golden Rams responded in the 34th minute when senior Cara Deola tied the score with a rebound goal that bounced off the crossbar.
 
West Chester took a 2-1 lead just four minutes into the second half with sophomore Kara Parvel’s close range score. California’s Chelsea Crockett tied it back up at 2-2 in the 87th minute with a penalty kick.
 
After two overtime periods that featured only one shot between the two teams, West Chester claimed the win with a 4-2 advantage on penalty kicks.
 
West Chester goalie Alex Srolis tallied nine saves in the win, while California’s keeper Meghan Jayes recorded four.
 
The Golden Rams advance to the third round of the NCAA Tournament and will host No. 5 West Virginia Wesleyan on November 21 at Rockwell Field.

East Stroudsburg Upset by West Virginia Wesleyan on PKs
 
East Stroudsburg, Pa. – No. 1 East Stroudsburg battled No. 5 West Virginia Wesleyan to a scoreless tie before falling 4-2 on penalty kicks in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday.
 
Freshman goalkeeper Jess Hetrick recorded three saves and a shutout in the first 110 minutes for the Warriors, but was unable to stop any of the West Virginia Wesleyan penalty kicks.
 
With the win, West Virginia Wesleyan advances to play No. 2 West Chester on Friday, November 21 at Rockwell Field.

NCAA FIRST ROUND RECAP

California Defeats Kutztown in Penalty Kicks
 
West Chester, Pa. – No. 6 California defeated No. 3 Kutztown with a 4-3 advantage in penalty kicks after playing to a 1-1 tie through two overtime periods in the NCAA Division II Women’s Soccer First Round in West Chester, Pa.
 
California advances to the NCAA Second Round and will play No. 2 West Chester on Sunday, November 16 at noon. The winner will play the victor of East Stroudsburg vs. West Virginia Wesleyan for the Atlantic Regional title on November 21. 
 
California’s Jordan Gray notched the first goal of the match and her first on the year in the 29th minute. The Vulcans were able to hold on to that lead until just under four minutes left in regulation. Kutztown’s Katie Jaxheimer found Diana Malanga at the 86:09 mark for her eight goal of the season.
 
After two scoreless 10-minute periods of overtime, the game was decided by penalty kicks. California’s Danielle Macleary, Chelsea Crockett, Kara Novotny, and Marissa Antrilli all scored on their penalty kick attempts, while Kutztown’s Logan Kramer, Sam Busillo, and Mariah Dimm converted on their opportunities.
 
The Golden Bears end their season with a 15-5-5 overall record after gaining entry into their second consecutive NCAA Tournament and advancing to the PSAC title game last weekend.
 
California is making its sixth straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament, including two quarterfinal appearances. The Vulcans have never lost an NCAA First Round match.

East Stroudsburg to Play West Virginia Wesleyan

East Stroudsburg, Pa. - West Virginia Wesleyan defeated Notre Dame (Ohio) 1-0 in the NCAA Division II Women's Soccer First Round on Friday afternoon and advances to play top-seeded East Stroudsburg in the Second Round. 

The Warriors will host West Va. Wesleyan on Sunday, November 16 at 1 p.m.

The winner will play the victor of California vs. West Chester for the Atlantic Regional title on November 21.

Indianapolis – Four PSAC teams earned entry into the field of 48 squads competing in the 2014 NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Championship tournament, announced by the NCAA Monday evening.
 
East Stroudsburg was granted the No. 1 seed and will face the winner of No. 4 Notre Dame (Ohio) and No. 5 West Virginia Wesleyan. Notre Dame and W. Va. Wesleyan will play on Friday, November 14. The Warriors’ second round game will be played on Sunday, November 16 at 1:00 p.m.
 
West Chester earned the No. 2 seed and will host the winner of No. 3 Kutztown and No. 6 California on Sunday at noon. The Golden Bears and Vulcans will play at noon on Friday.
 
The two finalists in each region will advance to the Atlantic Regional Championship slated for Friday, November 21. The winner of the Atlantic Region will play the East Region champion on Sunday, November 23 in the NCAA Quarterfinals. The semifinals and championship games will take place December 4 and 6 at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium in Louisville, Kentucky, hosted by Bellarmine and the Louisville Sports Commission.
