Lock Haven, Pa. – Laura Subject of Clarion and Julia O’Brien of West Chester were selected by the league’s head coaches as the 2014 PSAC Volleyball Athletes of the Year of their respective divisions, alongside PSAC Defensive Athletes of the Year Clarion’s Morgan Seybold and Pitt-Johnstown’s Devan Orr.

Clarion’s Gabrielle Olson and Kendall Mahony of Pitt-Johnstown earned PSAC Freshman of the Year honors, while Clarion’s head coach Jennifer Mills was selected as the West’s Coach of the Year and Pitt-Johnstown’s Joanna Haupt is the East Coach of the Year.

Subject, a three-time All-PSAC First Team honoree, is the first to repeat as the PSAC West Athlete of the Year since Li YiZhi of Lock Haven earned the honor three years in a row from 2005-07. Subject leads the league and ranks in Division II’s top 15 with 11.37 assists/set, while setting-up a group of Clarion hitters that hold a  .219 attack percentage. The senior setter is tied for eighth in the PSAC with 45 service aces on the year along with 75 kills, 2.61 digs per set and 39 total blocks. She is just the second Clarion player to earn the PSAC Athlete of the Year laurel, with Kellie Bartman being the first in 2010.

O’Brien, a two-time All-PSAC East First Team selection, has 408 terminations on the year and a 3.37 kills per set average ranking her second in the Eastern Division. She is hitting at a .283 attack rate and has a total 110 blocks on the season for a 0.91 per set average. The middle blocker has led the Golden Rams into the PSAC Semifinals this weekend after posting a triple-double in a 3-1 win over Pitt-Johnstown in the quarterfinals. O’Brien tallied 13 kills, 11 digs and 10 blocks in the victory. She is the first PSAC East Athlete of the Year hailing from West Chester since Kirsten Decker clinched the award in 2007.

Seybold, an All-PSAC West First Team selection, has sprawled for 720 digs in 2014 for a PSAC-best 6.37 digs per set, ranking her amongst Division II’s top five liberos. She has also recorded 29 services aces on the season. Seybold is the second Clarion player to earn PSAC Defensive Athlete of the Year honors since Rhianon Brady earned the inaugural award in 2010.

In 125 sets played Orr has accumulated a PSAC and Division II-high 776 digs for an average of 6.21 per set. The All-PSAC East Second Team selection is also tied for eighth in the league with 45 services aces. With Pitt-Johnstown just joining the league in 2013, Orr is the first Lady Cat PSAC Defensive Athlete of the Year.

Olson proved to be the league’s most efficient freshman hitter this season with a .313 attack percentage that ranks fifth amongst PSAC leaders. The All-PSAC West Second Team selection accumulated 252 kills for 2.23 kills per set. The middle hitter recorded 93 total blocks, including 17 solo stops in 113 sets played. Olson is the first PSAC Freshman of the Year from Clarion since Lisa Flynn shared the accolade with Slippery Rock’s Nicole St. Antoine in 1993.

Mahony, an All-PSAC East First Team selection, posted 357 kills in 127 sets for an average of 2.81 kills per set ranking her amongst the league’s top 15 hitters. The middle hitter swung at a .286 attack rate, while racking-up 59 service aces second in the league to only teammate Delaney Roman’s 60. Mahony also contributed a team-high 100 total blocks, including 20 solo stops. She is the second straight PSAC East Freshman of the Year from Pitt-Johnstown, as Marissa Erminio took the honor a season ago.

Mills has earned back-to-back PSAC West Coach of the Year honors after guiding the program to two straight PSAC West regular season titles. In her eight years at the helm of the program, the Golden Eagles have made seven PSAC Tournament appearances, including six straight. Mills was also named the PSAC West Coach of the Year in 2010 after guiding the Golden Eagles to a PSAC title and to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight.

Haupt clinched PSAC East Coach of the Year honors in just her second season at the helm of the Lady Cats program. As season ago she guided her squad to Pitt-Johnstown’s first ever PSAC title in any sport with a 3-2 victory over California. Over her two seasons she has posted a 45-24 overall record and has produced seven All-PSAC selections.

In the East, Taylor Gottshall of Shippensburg is making her third appearance on the All-PSAC rosters, while O’Brien and Kutztown’s Audrey Stringer are repeat First Team selections. In the Western Division, Subject and Gannon’s Megan Wendel are three-time All-PSAC selections, while both California’s Laurel Miller and Seton Hill’s Corrine Gahagen are repeat First Team honorees.
