Lock Haven, Pa. – West Chester’s Sean McCartney has earned PSAC East Offensive Athlete of the Year honor, while Bloomsburg’s Justin Shirk was named the PSAC East Defensive Athlete of the Year, as selected by league’s head coaches.

Shippensburg’s Chavez Cheatham was tabbed the PSAC East Freshman of the Year and Bloomsburg head coach Paul Darragh was named the Coach of the Year for the second straight season.

McCartney, an All-PSAC First Team selection, owns the league’s top and Division II’s seventh best passing efficiency with 164.2. He has completed 202-335 passes so far this season and has thrown for a PSAC-high and Division II’s second-most 34 touchdowns. He now holds 84 career touchdown passes and ranks amongst the league’s top 10 all-time quarterbacks. The senior from Doylestown, Pa. is averaging 272.55 passing yards per game and has thrown for more than 300 yards five times this season, including one 403-yard performance. McCartney is the first PSAC Offensive Athlete of the Year hailing from West Chester since Mike Washington garnered the honor in 2008.

Shirk, a four-time All-PSAC honoree including two First Team appearances, currently ranks third in the league with 9.7 tackles per game, while his 1.95 tackles for loss per outing ranks him atop the Eastern Division. The senior linebacker has recorded a team-high 97 tackles, including 48 solo stops, alongside 19.5 tackles for a loss of 82 yards. He has 8.5 sacks on the season, a pair of forced fumbles, and one interception. Shirk has captained a defensive unit that is allowing opponents a PSAC-low 295.6 yards of offense per game, good enough for 14th in Division II.  Shirk is the first PSAC East Defensive Athlete of the Year from Bloomsburg since Anthony Smith and Mike Varanvage earned the honor in 2009 and 2010, respectively.

Cheatham, the first PSAC East Freshman of the Year from Shippensburg, played in all 11 games for the Red Raiders and racked-up 68 tackles, while ranking second on the team with 40 solo stops. The defensive back from Aberdeen, Md. forced a pair of fumbles, recorded two interceptions and notched nine pass breakups for 11 passes defended. Cheatham’s 1.0 passes defended per game ranks amongst the league’s top 15. The last Raider to earn Freshman of the Year honors was Brent Grimes in 2002, when Shippensburg competed in the Western Division.

Darragh took over the Bloomsburg program in February of 2013 and has led the Huskies to two straight NCAA Championship Second Round appearances and a pair of PSAC Championship games. Bloomsburg is 20-3 under Darragh, marking the first time a Bloomsburg coach has turned-in back-to-back 10-win season since Danny Hale’s squads won 11 games in 2005 and 12 in 2006. Darragh was also named the 2013 PSAC East Coach of the Year after leading the Huskies to its first PSAC Championship title since 1985.

The 2014 East All-PSAC teams mark the fourth All-PSAC appearance for Shirk and Shippensburg’s Brian Sourber, while Bloomsburg’s Eddie Mateo, Shippensburg’s Trevor Harman, East Stroudsburg’s Bryan Thomson, Cheyney’s Isaiah Fleming, and West Chester’s Ronell Williams are all making their third All-PSAC appearance.
