Lock Haven, Pa. – Gannon’s Brock Jones was named PSAC West Offensive Athlete of the Year, while Clarion’s Julian Howsare was deemed PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Year, as selected by the league’s head coaches.

Slippery Rock’s defensive lineman Marcus Martin clinched PSAC West Freshman of the Year honors, and Mercyhurst’s head coach Marty Schaetzle is the PSAC West Coach of the Year.

Jones led Gannon to nine wins this season, tying the school record set in 2003. He led the conference with 162.8 rushing yards per game and ranks third in Division II. Jones found the endzone on 18 occasions in 2014 and is first in the Western Division with 19.8 points per game. The All-PSAC First Team selection rushed for 1,628 yards marking the most in the league and the sixth-highest total in D-II. He rushed for more than 100 yards in all but one game this season, eclipsed the 200-yard mark twice, and finished the year with a 321-yard performance against East Stroudsburg. Jones is the first PSAC major award winner from Gannon since the institution joined the PSAC in 2008.

Howsare, a two-time PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Year and three-time All-PSAC First Team defensive lineman, accumulated 86 tackles in 2014 and a team-high 48 solo stops for an average of 7.8 tackles per game. He recorded 12.5 tackles for a loss of 69 yards during his senior season, including 9.0 sacks for 58 yards. The Altoona, Pa. native also registered three forced fumbles, five pass break ups, three blocked kicks, and one interception. Howsare recorded nine or more tackles in five games this season, including 16 tackles against PSAC Champion Slippery Rock. Before Howsare earned the PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Year a year ago, Troy Bowers in 2003 was the most recent Defensive Athlete of the Year from Clarion.

Martin leads the league and ranks eighth in Division II with 2.0 tackles for loss per game with a total of 22.5 on the year. The defensive lineman also ranks third in D-II with 1.45 sacks per outing behind a total of 16 sacks for 118 yards. He has recorded 66 tackles this season, including three pass breakups and a forced fumble. In the last three divisional games of the season, Martin recorded at least 3.5 tackles for loss and 3.0 sacks per game. The West Mifflin, Pa. native is the first Slippery Rock PSAC Freshman of the Year since D.J. Flick garnered the laurel in 1998.

Schaetzle, in his 13th season at the helm of the Mercyhurst program, led the Lakers to a 7-4 record and finished the season on a seven-game win streak after going 0-4 to start the year. Mercyhurst finished 6-1 against West opponents, tying the program’s best record against divisional foes since joining the PSAC in 2008. Schaetzle guided the program to the PSAC title in 2010 and was named the PSAC Western Division Coach of the Year that season. He was also granted Coach of the Year honors in 2008 and has led the Lakers to their fifth winning season over the last seven years.

Gannon’s Justin Caliste has earned All-Conference honors all four years of his collegiate career, while Mercyhurst’s Brandon Brown-Dukes, California’s Jack Abercrombie, California’s Andy Cerett, and Howsare are three-time selections.
