NCAA Baseball World Series: Seton Hill's Season Comes to an End

Cary, N.C. – Seton Hill fell 3-1 to Minnesota State-Mankato on Wednesday night in the 2014 NCAA Division II Baseball Championship in Cary, N.C. to cap its historic season.
 
The Griffins finish the year with a 41-17 record with its first-ever NCAA World Series appearance.
 
Seton Hill started hot notching four hits in their first at bat and managed one run. Brendan Constantino lead off the inning with a single to right center followed by a Taylor Schmidt hit and run to right field. With Constantino at third, Schmidt attempted to steal second, which allowed Constantino to reach home safely.
 
All three Mankato runs were scored in the fourth inning. With two outs Stetson Olson worked for a walk and was brought around to third by Taylor Branstad’s single up the middle. Mike Andries scored Olson with a single down the right field line, and McCallum’s triple to right center brought home both Branstad and Andries.
 
Seton Hill finished the game with eight hits, while MSU hit six. Nick Sell led the Griffins with three hits.
 
Jordan Fuller is tabbed with the loss after 4.2 innings of work and giving-up all three Mankato runs on five hits. Alex Haines pitched the remaining 3.1 innings and surrendered just one hit and struckout five.
 
MSU advances in the tournament and will play Southern Indiana on Thursday, May 29 at 4:00 p.m.

Seton Hill Falls to Colorado Mesa

Cary, N.C. – Seton Hill fell 6-2 to Colorado Mesa on Tuesday night in the 2014 NCAA Division II Baseball Championship in Cary, N.C.
 
Colorado Mesa posted two runs in the fourth, fifth and eighth innings. The Griffins managed a single run in the fifth and another run in the bottom of the eighth. The Mavericks finished the night with 11 hits, while Seton Hill totaled seven. Nick Sell went 2-for-4 at the plate for the Griffins.
 
Seton Hill capitalized on two Maverick missteps to score its only runs of the game. Dan Abbennante crossed the plate safely thanks to a throwing error committed by the first baseman Garrett Woodward. Abbennate climbed aboard with a two-out single to left field. Brandon Constantino scored Seton Hill’s second run of the game off a wild pitch. Constantino singled up the middle to leadoff the eighth inning.
 
Brad Schnelle suffers the pitching loss after six innings of work and surrendering three earned runs on eight hits. Logan Urtz relieved Schenlle and pitched the final three innings and allowed two runs and three hits.
 
With the loss the Griffins will play Minnesota State – Mankato on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. in an elimination game. Seton Hill, now 41-16 on the season, defeated Mankato 4-2 in the opening round of the NCAA Championship.

Seton Hill Advances with 4-2 Win

Cary, N.C. – Seton Hill defeated Minnesota State – Mankato 4-2 in the opening round of the 2014 NCAA Division II Baseball Championship in Cary, N.C.
 
Seton Hill posted three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Cody Herald singled to move Anthony Fanelli to third. Nick Sell then scored Fanelli with a single to left field. After a strikeout and a double steal, Matt Malacane’s single to left field drove in two more runs to put the Griffins ahead 3-0.  
 
The Mavs answered back in the top of the second with a pair of runs with the help of a Parker Sullivan triple to right center.
 
Seton Hill added an insurance run in the eighth inning. Malacane singled up the middle to score Sell, who got aboard with a single.
 
Mike Bittel earned his ninth win of the season for Seton Hill. He pitched five innings and surrendered two runs on six hits. Brett Sullivan entered the game for three innings and gave-up just two hits. Jesse Cooper earned the save, his 17th of the season, an pitched one inning and gave up one hit.
 
Herald, Sell and Malacane each finished the game with two hits, while Taylor Schmidt went 3-for-3 at the dish. Malacane finished with three RBI and Sell drove-in one run and crossed the plate twice.
 
With the victory, the Griffins improve to 41-15 on the season and will face Colorado Mesa on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.

West Lawn, Pa. - The Seton Hill Griffins earned their first ever NCAA World Series appearance after 3-0 victory over Millersville in the Atlantic Regional final on Sunday afternoon. Brett Sullivan went the distance to earn the complete game victory. SHU moves to 40-15 overall, and Millersville ends its season with a 39-16 record.

Seton Hill broke the ice with a run in the top of the second inning.  Chris Miller led off with a single and stole second base.  After a strikeout, Garret Vrbanic singled to move Miller to third.  Vrbanic was then picked off with a first to third move. Brandon Jossey then came through with a huge two out RBI single to give SHU the 1-0 lead. Sullivan was able to get out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the second on a groundout to Vrbanic.

The Griffins added a run in the top of the fifth without a hit.  Marauder starter Tad Barton hit two hitters and walked another to load the bases before Anthony Fanelli's sacrifice fly scored Brandon Jossey to give the Griffins a 2-0 lead.  SHU continued to add on in the sixth.  Cody Herald doubled to the left center field gap with one out.  He moved to third base on a wild pitch and scored on a perfectly executed squeeze play by Matt Malacane to give SHU the 3-0 lead.

Millersville got a one out double in the eighth but Sullivan got a strikeout looking and a foul out to Malacane to set down the Marauders. Millersville got a leadoff double in the ninth but Sullivan settled down and got a groundout, flyout and a strikeout to end the contest and send the Griffins to Cary for the first time in program history.

Sullivan went the distance to earn his eighth victory of the season. He scattered 8 hits for the complete game shutout. He struck out 4 hitters and walked just one. Fanelli, Malacane and Jossey each had one RBI in the contest.

The Griffins will play the Central Regional winner Minnesota State- Mankato in Cary on Sunday May 25 at 1 PM.

ATLANTIC REGIONAL  - DAY 3

Seton Hill to Play for Atlantic Regional Crown

 
West Lawn, Pa. – Seton Hill handed Millersville an 8-2 loss on Saturday in West Lawn, Pa. to earn the right to play for the 2014 NCAA Division II Baseball Atlantic Regional title.
 
The Griffins improve to 39-15 on the season and have advanced to their second consecutive NCAA Atlantic Regional title game.
 
The Griffins’ offense was led by Brendan Costantino 4-for-5 effort and two runs scored. Garret Vrbanic added three hits and two runs. Nick Sell, Cody Herald, Chris Miller and Taylor Schmidt each finished with two hits, while Sell drove-in two runs.
 
Seton Hill tacked-on a run in the first inning followed by a three-run second inning and another in the third to give the Griffins a 5-0 lead. Neither team would notch a run again until Seton Hill added one in the eighth inning and Millersville responded with one of its own. The Griffins posted two more runs in the ninth and Millersville mustered one more in the second stanza to close out the contest.
 
Jordan Fuller earned his fifth win of the season on the mound for Seton Hill. He went 7.2 innings and gave up just one run on six hits and struckout four hitters. Jesse Cooper earned his 16th save of the season with 1.2 innings of relief. 
 
Seton Hill advances in the NCAA Regional and will meet Millersville in the regional final. First pitch is set for 12 PM on Sunday afternoon.

Kutztown Defeats Shepherd to Stay Alive
 
West Lawn, Pa. – Kutztown defeated Shepherd 3-2 in the NCAA Division II Baseball Atlantic Regional on Saturday evening in West Lawn, Pa.
 
With the game tied 2-2 in the bottom of the ninth, Kutztown’s Brady McNab battled for a full-count walk with the bases loaded to bring home the game-winning run.
 
Pat Flynn threw the first seven innings for Kutztown and allowed both of Shepherd’s runs on four hits. Matt Swarmer came in for the win and pitched two innings and gave up just one hit.
 
With the win, the Golden Bears advance to face Millersville in an elimination game immediately following.

Millersville to Play Seton Hill for Regional Title
 
West Lawn, Pa. – Millersville ousted Kutztown from the 2014 NCAA Division II Baseball Atlantic Regional with a 3-1 victory on Saturday night in West Lawn, Pa.
 
With the win Millersville will play Seton Hill for the regional title on Sunday, May 18 at noon. The Marauders will need to defeat unbeaten Seton Hill twice in order to claim the title and advance in the NCAA Tournament. Millersville most recently won the regional crown in 2011 and are making their third appearance in the last four seasons in the NCAA Tournament.
 
Millersville finished the night with 10 hits and 10 runners left on base, while Kutztown smacked nine hits and stranded 12. Tyler Orris went 3-for-5 for the Marauders and scored a run. Dan Stoltzfus recorded two hits, while Zach Stone and Dan Johnson both drove in a run.
 
Brandon Miller is credited with the pitching win after six innings of work. He allowed one run one seven hits and struckout three batters. Matt Binder made a pitching appearance and walked two batters. Adam Zipko completed three innings and allowed two hits and fanned six hitters.
 
Kutztown ends its season with a 32-21 overall record and its first PSAC Championship title since 2008.

ATLANTIC REGIONAL - DAY TWO

Kutztown Stays Alive with Win over Winston-Salem State

 
West Lawn, Pa. – Kutztown defeated Winston-Salem State 1-0 on Friday afternoon in the 2014 NCAA Division II Baseball Atlantic Regional in West Lawn, Pa.
 
The game was originally scheduled for noon but was delayed until 4:45 due to heavy rainfall Thursday night that lasted throughout Friday morning.
 
Kutztown will play Shepherd at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday in an elimination game.
 
The Golden Bears notched the lone run of the game in the top of the ninth inning when Kyle Stoudt worked a full count and hit a sacrifice fly into left field that scored Warren Stimpson. Stimpson was pinch running for pinch hitter Carson Baker who singled through the left side to open the inning.
 
Colin Holmes threw 8.1 innings for Kutztown and allowed four hits while striking out two. Matt Swarmer got the save with .2 innings of work. He struckout on and walked another.

Millersville Eliminates Mercyhurst
 
West Lawn, Pa. – Millersville outlasted Mercyhurst 5-3 on Friday evening in the 2014 NCAA Division II Baseball Atlantic Regional in West Lawn, Pa.
 
The game was originally scheduled for 3:30 p.m. but was delayed until 7:30 due to heavy rainfall Thursday night that lasted throughout Friday morning.
 
With the win Millersville advances in the regional to and will play Seton Hill on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Mercyhurst ends its season with a 30-15 overall record.
 
With the game tied at three apiece headed into the top of the 12th inning the Millersville Marauders finally broke through to win the game. Kurt Seiders broke-open the inning with a double to right field. David Summerfield followed Seiders’ double with a walk and Mark Stuckey’s single to left field loaded the bases. After a Mercyhurst pitching change and a strikeout, Chas McCormick worked the count for a walk to score the Marauders’ fourth run of the night, followed by a Tyler Orris walk that allowed the team’s fifth and final run of the night cross the plate.
 
Millersville’s Adam Zipko is credited with the win going the final four innings of the contest. Zipko allowed four hits, walked three and struckout three batters in 20 batters faced. Chris Murphy got the start and went eight innings and gave-up two earned runs and 12 hits.
 
Millersville finished the 12-inning marathon with 11 hits and Mercyhurst totaled 16. The Lakers stranded 17 runners and Millersville deserted 16.

Seton Hill Downs Shepherd
 
West Lawn, Pa. – Seton Hill defeated Shepherd 4-1 early Saturday morning in the 2014 NCAA Division II Baseball Atlantic Regional in West Lawn, Pa.
 
The game was originally scheduled for late afternoon but was delayed until 10:45 pm. due to heavy rainfall Thursday night that lasted throughout Friday morning.
 
With the win Seton Hill will play Millersville on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
 
Seton Hill first got on the scoreboard in the third inning when Brendan Costantino singled down the right field line to score Garret Vrbanic. The Griffins added two more runs in the fourth. Nick Sell started the inning with a single and scored on a Cody Herald double. Matt Malacane then singled home Herald to give Seton Hill a 3-0 lead. Seton Hill allowed a Shepherd run in the seventh but got it right back in the bottom of the inning. Vrbanic led off the inning with a single and eventually scored on a wild pitch to give the Griffins a 4-1 lead.
 
Brad Schnelle earned the victory on the mound, as he threw 7.0 innings and gave up seven hits and just one run. Alex Haines clinched the save with two scoreless innings of work.

ATLANTIC REGIONAL - DAY ONE

Millersville Walks-off Kutztown

 
West Lawn, Pa. – Millersville clinched a 3-2 walk-off victory in the first round of play of the 2014 NCAA Division II Baseball Atlantic Regional on Thursday afternoon in West Lawn, Pa.
 
Dan Stoltzfus opened the bottom of the ninth inning with a double down the left field line. He advanced to third from a passed ball and a Kurt Seiders’ grounder that was mishandled at second base allowed Stoltzfus to score the winning run.
 
The Marauders also posted runs in the first and fourth inning before Kutztown evened the game at two apiece in the seventh inning from a Kyle Stoudt single up the middle that scored two runs.
 
Tyler Orris, Zach Stone, Dan Johnson, and Stoltzfus each tallied two hits in the Millersville victory.
 
Tad Barton went 6.1 innings for the Marauders and surrendered both Kutztown runs. Matt Binder pitched .1 innings, while Adam Zipko finished out the game’s final 2.1 innings and earned the victory. He allowed two hits and struckout four batters.
 
Millersville will now play Mercyhurst at 3:30 p.m., and Kutztown will face Winston-Salem State on Friday at 12:00 p.m.

Seton Hill Defeats Mercyhurst
 
West Lawn, Pa. – Seton Hill defeated Mercyhurst 4-1 in the first round of play of the 2014 NCAA Division II Baseball Atlantic Regional on Thursday evening in West Lawn, Pa.
 
The Griffins scored all four of their runs in the bottom of the seventh inning led by Garret Vrbanic’s double that drove-in two runs that followed a Matt Malacane bunt that was thrown away at third that allowed Cody Herald to score. Brendan Costantino then singled home Vrbanic to give the Griffins a 4-0 lead.
 
The Lakers countered with a run in the eighth to trim the lead to 4-1.
 
Mike Bittel earned the win on the mound as he went 7.2 innings and allowed six hits and a run while striking out six. Jesse Cooper earned his 15th save and closed out the contest.
 
Seton Hill will play Shepherd at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, and Mercyhurst will face Millersville at 3:30 p.m.

Four PSAC Teams Gain Entry into NCAA D-II Baseball Championship

Indianapolis – Four PSAC teams earned bids into the 2014 NCAA Division II Baseball Atlantic Regional to be hosted by Kutztown University from May 15-18. All games will be played in West Lawn, Pa. at Owls Field at Ted Palka Park.
 
Millersville earned the No. 1 seed and will play No. 6 Kutztown in the opening round. Kutztown earned the PSAC’s automatic qualifying bid by winning the PSAC Championship.
 
Seton Hill was given the No. 3 seed and will play No. 4 seed Mercyhurst.
 
The other matchup features No. 2 seed Shepherd versus No. 5 seed and CIAA Champion Winston-Salem State. 
 
All eight regionals are double-elimination tournaments and will be played May 15-18. Regional champions will advance to the double-elimination championship finals May 24-31 at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina. The finals will be hosted by the University of Mount Olive and the town of Cary, North Carolina.
 
This year marks the 47th annual championship, and the sixth consecutive year that the finals have been held in Cary, North Carolina.
